any chance you can get Hank Hannegraf on the show again? i had heard he was on there some time back, though this was before i was listening. i like both shows (yours and his), but must admit i get very frustrated with his same old quotes every day. he often refers to “traditional Christian ideas” (i forget his actual phrase for this) but rarely does he outline what he considers to be “traditional” or “orthodox.” at times, he seems like he’s on the verge of becoming catholic himself, as it seems much of his logic would lead him there!

i am a nearly-converted-protestant who tends to be the lone Catholic apologist on a few evangelical forums. it keeps me digging into what i believe and why. i almost converted 2 years ago, in fact was in RCIA right up until 2 weeks from Easter, when my (very anti-catholic, modern evangelical protestant) wife basically said she would leave me if i became Catholic. since then, i have tried to keep my faith somewhat quiet, though try to BE Christ to my family on a daily basis rather than get in theological arguments with my wife. “CAL” has been extremely instrumental in my education in the faith.

The Bible Answer Man is one of the reasons (although indirectly) I eventually converted to teh RCC. I was a Lutheran going through RCIA to become a Catholic in name only. Just trying to unify my young family. I had undergone a conversion but wasn’t sure I could become Catholic.

Well, I was listening to Hank talk about one guy and how he was a heretic and then another who was fine. I couldn’t keep up with which evangelist was okay and which one wasn’t. So the question came to mind, “how am I suppossed to know what to believe?”

Well, someone called in and asked that very same question. Hank said you have to immerse yourself so much in scripture and the faith that you can just tell.

I’m like a lot of people, I’m just never going to have to have the time to so fully immerse myself that I’m going to being able to tell what was right or wrong. What was I going to do call Hank every time I needed a question answered. Who the heck is he any way.

Then it came to me…that is why we need one definitive source and the RCC is the only one who can claim to be around since Christ. It all made sense and launched me into research on the authority of the Church. After that I couldn’t wait to become a Catholic in more-than-name-only.
 
About 6 years ago I began to look at other churches even though I was a cradle Catholic with 12 years of Cathlic education in the perochial school.
It did not take long to see that the rest of the church world does not understand Holy Commuion and the role of “The Blessed Virgin Mary” or the authority that is resident in the Church to bind and loose. The more I read the Bible the more Catholic I become. I seem to see Jesus foot prints and the role of His Church every where I turn. Some of my visions I have posted under the title “Starting out on the wrong foot”.
This God who created both heaven and earth has left His word even in the landscape of this world and His Word is very Catholic.

Who was given the keys to the kingdom (with the right to teach truth) - the pope and magesterium through Peter or Hank (the bible answer man). I go for the first.
I used to listen to Hank all the time and liked a lot of what he taught until I converted.
It’s too bad he doesn’t convert - He would make a good Catholic apologist - along with James White.

Hi Tad,

I can’t envision us having Hank on the program. Not because of any particular reason, I don’t suppose, other than the fact that, up until now, many of our networks and affiliates have been a little squeemish (sp?) about the prospect of us having non- or anti-Catholics on the program.

Actually, we’ve had quite a few non-Catholics, and it’s hard to tell if Hank is simply “non-” or if he’s “anti-.” In either case, we’ve discussed having “debates” and similar things on CAL, but just haven’t found the right opportunity. Of course, we’d be completely open to such an arrangement. And it would be fun to give OUR listeners a chance to call and interact with Hank, James White, et al, much like what Jimmy Akin had to go through when appearing on the Bible Answer Man a few years ago :eek:

By the way, as I was reading your post, and got to the part where you said that your anti-Catholic wife would leave you if you “poped,” I was going to respond by asking where she ended up, but then I saw that you didn’t quite make it all the way (at least, not yet) 😃

Glad you like the show - let us know if we can EVER do anything to assist you…and the line about your wife was, need I say, a joke :cool: May the two of you fall more deeply in love with each other (and with Christ and His Church) everyday of your lives!!!

Please pray for Hank. He is a dynamic defender of the faith, even though he has not come into its fullness. Consider him as a first step toward conversion and everything will seem better. I particularly appreciate his response to Dan Brown’s Davinci Code. Hank cares for the salvation of people and suffers over the loss of even one. Of this there can be absolutely no doubt. In this neo-pagan time, Hank is a breath of fresh air and I wish that my fellow Catholics could defend their beliefs 1/4 as well as does Hank. If I were the pope, I would give Hank an honorary diploma.

I agree! I think Hank would make a GREAT Catholic apologist if he could just get past what I think may be spiritual pride (judgement not intended). I think that’s the problem with most protestants - especially when they’ve had the Catholic faith shown to them - scripturally.
I love his arguments against abortion, evolution, contraception, The DaVinci Code - the list goes on.
Because I have many siblings who have left the Catholic Church, I’ve listened to him for years. I like to stay abreast of what they believe in so we can dialogue. I think you have to be deeply rooted in your faith do listen to somebody like him or his argumrents could shake that faith. There was a time when I wouldn’t have been able to. Thank God for the truth that is His Holy church!!

I am listening to Hank on his program today (July 5th) and a women phoned in who was Catholic but has left the church for a protestant denomination.Her husband is a deacon and she is trying to convert him. Hank is going to send her literature to try to convert him. Pray for strenght for him.
My question: Hank said that there was a Pope who said that anyone who believed in the assumption of Mary would be considered anathema. Of course Pope Paul II and of course the Church do believe it. Does anyone know anything about this.
By the way - Hank has this women eating out of his hand.

There’s a conversion story on the Coming Home Network by a couple who worked for Hank Hanegraaff at CRI and converted to the Catholic faith. You’ll find other great conversion stories there (including mine, Jay Damien 😉 ). But there you will also find the conversion story of Patty Bonds. She is the sister of the famous professional anti-Catholic James White, arguably the best Protestant apologist in the U.S. She admits that she was as anti-Catholic as he is before she discovered the Truth of the Catholic Church.

Protestants go at the questions backwards. The Bible didn’t exist for the first 400 years of Christianity. Therefore, it cannot be the sole rule for faith and morals. Jesus didn’t leave us a Book, He left us a Church. And the Church produced the Bible.

This poor woman you mentioned has lost her own soul, and now she’s trying to lead her husband down the same path. There is only one correct interpretation of the New Testament — and that is the one the sacred writers intended to convey when they wrote it. The Apostles taught the Church that was founded by Christ for the salvation of the world, and the Church in turn has taught others for 2,000 years. The Church speaks for Christ: “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me . . .” Luke 10:16. This woman has rejected Christ and His Church.

If she wants to know what the NT means, she should ask the Church that wrote it – not Hank Hanegraff. The NT is a reflection of the living, dynamic, teaching Church who speaks with the authority of Christ, not the other way around.

Hi, Walter. Wouldn’t James White be pleased to know he was an occasion of grace for you that ultimately resulted in your conversion! He has certainly not been pleased about the conversions of Cindy Beck and her husband (who worked for CRI), nor about his sister. If he can’t convince his own sister, it reflects negatively on him as a Protestant apologist, and it’s painful. But when you learn the TRUTH, it’s irresistible.

Marcus Grodi, who started the Coming Home Network to aid Protestant ministers and others interested in the Catholic Church, has a program on EWTN called “Journey’s Home.” Patty Bonds has been on his TV show, and it’s on tape. Her written story, however, is at chnetwork.org/converts.htm, as is Cindy Beck’s and mine.

This is the first time i have replied to a reply to one of my posts on this forum, so we’ll see how it goes. I’m attempting to reply to Sir Jerry Usher, so if this ends up somewhere else, my apologies!

Jerry, thanks for the note. My journey has been a bumpy one, but probably not much different from others heading to “Rome Sweet Home.” As a video producer, I’ve had some incredible opportunities that most Catholics would kill for, er, uh, well maybe they would just really like it a lot! I’ve been to Mexico City and seen (and shot/videotaped) the tilma. Last year I went to Rome with Leonardo DeFillipis with his Therese team and got my picture with the pope! INCREDIBLE! It still sends chills down my spine…but, alas, the pictures are sitting in a large envelope in my file cabinet as i live in a very protest-ant world. My wife barely said anything (other than fighting back the tears!) when I showed them to her. My mother-in-law was like, “oh, ya, the pope, uh huh. that’s nice.”

More to write, but not to bore you anymore. I know you’re busy, but i just wanted to say thanks for writing and know that i listen to you and Karl, James, er, uh “Jimmy” and Ros almost daily. Great show, so informative, and your love for Christ shines through. Keep my wife and i in your prayers at CAL as we will need in the coming months and years! Take care, my brother.
