I have some birthday money to burn and am looking for a good, comprehensive, Catholic commentary on the Bible, whether in one volume or several. Any suggestions? Also, what are some other good books to consider in adding to my library in regard to any area of apologetics, history, or whatever. Thanks.

Navarre Commentary Series

Original set is 12 books on the NT. Each is about $14

They also have printed hard cover books One is the NT, followed by multiple volumes of the NT (Gospel and Acts) (Romans & Galatians) etc.
The OT is out in multi volumes also. Pentauch, Psalms, Wisdom Books, Joshua thru Kings, etc and is almost complete.

Also: contact www.catholicintl.com to obtain a copy of the Gospel of Matthew - An Apologetic Study Bible from Robert Sungenis. This is so well done that even the Apologists who differ with him on none-doctrinal issues (some to the point of defamation) can’t deny the quality of this work. But it will only make you want more…he is working on the 12 volume set … Romans is next.

Enjoy

As MrS has pointed out, the Navarre Bible Commentary is very good.

Another one that I would highly recommend is the Douay-Rheims Haydock Bible commentary, as well as the volumes of the Ignatius Study Bible which have been published so far. And TAN Books publishes a good one volume commentary entitled “A Practical Commentary on Holy Scripture”.

I recommend The New Jerome Biblical Commentary. We use it in Theological Studies at the collegiate level - it is reccomended by some of the most orthodox and dynamic Catholic Colleges and Universities.

The scholarship is top notch and it is also used by many protestant colleges as well.

A couple of excellent books I enjoy and own are “Queen of the Cosmos” by Jan Connell, it is interviews with the Visionaries of Medjugorje. Also “The Story of a Soul”, the autobiography of Saint Therese of Lisieux. Both are very reasonable and excellent spirit/faith lifters. They are not Bible commentaries however excellent spiritual reading.

One of the best one volume commentaries is the International Bible Commentary. It’s a catholic commentary but includes contributions form protestants and catholics outside of America and Europe the usual places for thoelogical works. Asia, South america etc have their views on the Bible too. In some ways a third world view of the Bible is more relevant to their world than post modern america here your reminded of that.

if you a really serious about bible study, a good library of hard-cover bibles (large type if you need it). NAB Catholic Study Bible, Douay-Rheims, Jerusalem bible (1966), RSV-CE, Authorized Version (King James) for comparison. These are available on CD, some CDs have multiple bible translation & commentary. And the new CCC when it comes out. a good bible atlas.

Navarre NT now available in one volume for $40 from Ignatius Press

A Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture ed. Orchard, Fuller, et al. publ. Thomas Nelson is among my favorites. Written I believe in the 50’s, based on D-R, I find it very helpful. It’s long out of print so it’s probably necessary to check abebooks or ebay etc. I got mine on ebay.
