wfbxb?

The sand of the seashore, the drops of rain, the days of eternity: who can number these?

Oh darn, I love cryptograms! I am not naturally bright so they take me forever to figure out. I scrolled down to see how long the cryptogram went on and accidentally read the answers. 😛 Stupid me.

Tell me, how do you go about solving them? I usually try and figure out which is the letter e because it is the most common in the english language, but it is still slow going for me.

This particular cryptogram:

There is the 3 letter word “WFB” several times. When this happens it is probably “the” or “and”. Since “wfb” is at the start of the quotation it is probably not and. The last word in the cryptogram is “WFBXB”. This combination of letters “abcdc” very often is the word “there”. Seeing “wfbxb” in the same cryptogram as “wfb”, there is only one possibility (unless there are any very obscure unlikely ones!) That gives you the four letters t,h,e,r - including the first letters of eternity - which gives a good start to finding everything else.

Cryptograms in general:

Here’s something I just found online. It’s full of hints on how to solve these things:

cahlander.com/crypto/cryptopop.html

The only other hint I can add to this page is - practise, practise, practise.
