I am a big fan of Rabbi David Wolpe, who frequently appears on various Bible-themed programs on cable’s A&E network.
Although I consider myself a mainline-Catholic, I think it’s refreshing to consider other points of view, just for their insights.

This is a link to his essay about how the Jews viewed the Torah, the first five books of the Bible. Oddly, he largely takes the view that the Torah is not God’s word. And, he provides his arguments for that in Jewish tradition.
This essay also briefly addresses literalism in reading the Torah, which just isn’t possible, he says.
