My local CCD program teaches that Bible stories such as Noah and the loaves and fishes did not really happen but that Jesus had such an effect that everyone was moved to share and thus the extra food may have been left over, etc. that they are not to be taken litarially.

I have a problem with this. I ask the Priest’s and Sisters and they said that is the teaching of the Catholic Church. Is that true?

No.

The story of Noah could be a story, at least in part. Or it could be completely true. The Church leaves some things open, but does not dismiss the possibility that all events happened as described.

At best, the CCD teacher should say that one doesn’t have to take the story literally, but we still need to understand what it teaches. Most probably, the teacher should say nothing about it, as it simply causes confusion.

But the loaves and fishes? By all commentaries that I trust on this issue, I have never heard anyone suggest that it didn’t happen as told in the gospels. In fact, I would go so far as to say that this version is directly antithetical to Catholic teaching. The multiplication of loaves prefigures the Eucharist being available to all, for all time. To wash it down into a spirit of sharing is ridiculous. How are 5000 people going to share a few loaves and fishes?

I would ask for a source that proves it is Catholic teaching. He won’t be able to produce it.
