My wife and I have been having trouble with our eldest daughter (11 years) in reading comprehension. She can read at a high-school level, or so she thinks, and plows through books like they are nothing. The problem is, if the topic isn’t “her favorite”, then she doesn’t retain ANYTHING (or at least won’t answer even the simplest of questions about it).
So, instead of just having “Bible time” and not really knowing if she’s actually reading it or just skimming through it, I came up with a “Bible Study” just for her. (It’s also helping me because I have to pre-read and come up with the questions…it’s very cool.)

We’ve been taking about 2 chapters at a time (started in Acts) and I have been trying to stick to about 6 questions per quiz. It’s open-book…so she can answer as she reads. As we discuss the answers, we can get more or less in depth, check out the footnotes, page inserts, etc. (The benefits of a study Bible).

**I just wanted to encourage folks to try this out with your own kids if you feel like they need something like this. ** It’s been really helpful at our house so far and has encouraged good discussion, with our younger ones in audience (so they are learning at the same time!!!).

I wrote down what I’ve got so far, and anyone is welcome to use this. I’ll be adding more “Bible Study” posts as I get them written. So far, I only have Acts, chapters 1-7.

Here are my “quiz” questions.

Bible Study for Youth: Acts 1-7

You are my hero. The spirit of DIY seems to have been lost in the last half of the twentieth century.

I have done DIY education with my children over the summers and it has a comparatively large return for the time that is put in. I think in part, there is a realization by the children that their parents care enough about them to go through the trouble of making a course just for them. And there is no drilling, it’s all done for the love of bonding and education. Just 30 minutes a week gave notable returns.

Yes! In addition to that, I think part of the reason it has such a high rate of return is because you can literally customize the subject matter to fit each child. You can use their own unique strengths to hone their own unique weaknesses. Nothing compares!

Wonderful! Thank you for sharing. You are very generous. I already passed a link on to my husband for my kids to work on. I normally am in charge of their schooling and he is kind of lost at the moment. This will be a good guide for him to use while I’m gone. I think between this, religious ed at church and Khan Academy they should be alright until Baby and I get home.

Edited to add:

Our last name is written in the Acts of the Apostles as one of the 7 presented. It’s also a name in the Book of Maccabees. The kids have always gotten a kick out of hearing or last name read during Mass and a former priest added it to the litany of saints when one of our kids was baptized. We pray to him as a family and have been searching for an icon of him to hang in our home. Praying to lesser known saints produces great results!
