Happy New Year!

I haven’t been reading the bible as much I should have been so I have decided for this new year to read and study it everyday.

I was wondering if any of you have any good books that will help me in studying the bible, like explaining the various chapters and its historical context etc.

Any advice on how to study the bible would be appreciated 😃

For historical and exegetical context, the two books I used in my Deacon prep courses (one is OT, one is NT) were “Reading the New Testament” by Pheme Perkins, and “Reading the Old Testament - An Introduction” by Lawrence Boadt. Both also have excellent bibliographies to identify other texts if you want to dive deeper in an area.
 
my pastor expressed reservations about both these authors, (also they may be more info than you need to know as a beginner, very academic in tone)

I can recommend either Our Fathers Plan (Scott Hahn and Jeff Cavins, older 3-video set, now on DVD, with study guide, there is also a book)
and the great Bible Adventure (Jeff Cavins) study guides (pricey)
it is best in beginning your study of OT to have an overview of salvation history, to see more clearly the connect between OT and NT. Also for this reason a study based on lectionary readings is good.

Since your are just starting, Inside the Bible by ( I think, Fr. Kenneth Baker) from Ignatius press gives summary and historical context of each book. also from Ignatius is a great guide by Peter Kreeft, You Can Read Scripture, I think it is called or something similar (don’t have access to my library right now to check)

If you are really, really a beginner, start with How-To Book of the Bible from Our Sunday Visitor.

I second PuzzleAnnie’s recommendations. I have gone through both programs and find them both wonderful.

The really neat thing about the Jeff Cavins series is that several, including The Great Adventure: Bible Timeline now carries an imprimatur!

Katy, I would not use any other books for now. The best thing is to set aside about thirty minutes each day and read the bible without any aids. Hilight any parts you find interesting. Once you have finished reading the bible without any aids then you can study in depth the parts you hilighted. Take your time in reading it and you will get much more out of it. There are many surprising things in the bible. Did you ever hear the old saying by sailors? “Red sky in morning, sailor take warning, red sky at night, sailors delight”? With slightly different wording, it’s in the bible. Relax and read.
