I’d like to start doing an independent bible study. Anyone have any good resources that aren’t too heavy? I’m looking for something that is easy to read and has a workbook. Thanks!

I’m not sure what the word “independent” implies, you mean your own individual study-at-home sort of thing?
If you’re at an introductory level of study, then I might suggest the study programs at Ascension Press. (Catholic)
The way that program works, somebody buys the leader’s materials, study book, leader’s guide with answers to question, and dvd. Then the individual study members buy a work book and “join” a nearby group, perhaps. Then, you read the chapter(s) of the Bible for a particular lesson and then you either watch the video online or at a meeting room with others who are enrolled.
I just finished their study of the gospel of John. The video is essential to catch the meaning of the lesson, and twice through would help you catch anything that you might have missed. In a group, you could discuss the lesson.
But, I think there must be someway to “ride along” with some distant group, yet study at home. (sign up in their group but just study at home.)
The depth of this study is not at the textual criticism level, or anything like that. It’s really at the level of comprehending the message of this gospel.

Read the Gospel according to John.
Write down each time Jesus is compared / connected with God.
Write down what it says about the significance and consequences of belief / unbelief.
Write down what it time it references our connection / relationship to God.
If you have a study or reference Bible, look up the other Biblical references connected to the answers of each of those three questions.
Almost sounds too simple, but your faith and knowledge will be expanded deeply if you choose that route.
Good luck.

in the non-Catholic world, there are many study guides. If you’re interested, an author that has been recommended on EWTN radio is (Anglican Bishop) N.T. Wright. He is a prolific writer and has studies such as this:

My understanding is the Catholic home study service is no longer available. The books by Father Oscar Lukefahr and the workbooks can be found on Amazon if the OP wants to check them out but some of the workbooks which were paper in nature are outrageous and some cheap. The problem might be the used ones and I don’t know if they come with an answer key.
Just for your information.
I did all the studies and at that time you sent in the workbook or posted the answers on line, got all the answers and a grade and a certificate for certain levels. To my knowledge there is not a replacement for this great Catholic service and I thought the studies were well done.

I did too and it is still available and they’ve made the tests a lot more short than before. Apparently some people are too wimpy to do the serious studies that you and I did.

Start with the book of Acts. Read it slowly using the New American Bible. Pay attention to Stephen’s Discourse when you get to that part.

I would look into the stpaulcenter.com. It has some amazing studies by very reputable biblical scholars. Their studies are free and some are even audio so you can do on your own. There is a study out on The Bible and the Virgin Mary right now and I think it is also on that site for free. You can order the materials to go with it to delve deeper into the videos. That is a good start…or find a bible study program on The Great Adventure by Jeff Cavins from Ascension Press and join! You will learn so much!
