Revelation 3:21. “I will give the victor the right to sit with me on my throne, as I myself first won the victory and sit with my Father on his throne.” (NAB) A Mormon told me this as a justification for the belief that men can become gods. How do we explain this verse?

This is merely a statement concerning God’s love for us and the heavenly rewards that await those that enter heaven. There are many other things in scripture that speak of rewards and even thrones. Jesus says that the apostles are said to sit on 12 thrones.[Matt 19:27-28] Revelation 4:4 says that there are 24 elders sitting on 24 thrones in heaven. All of this is imagery of rewards, authority, and judgment granted to the saints by God. None of it is a reference to people becoming gods and somehow equal to Jesus.

Jesus is the Lord of Lords and the Alpha and the Omeqa. These titles are reserved for God. We can be as Peter says “partakers in the divine nature” but we do not become gods in the Mormon sense of the term. Nothing in scripture supports the Mormon notion. We are mere creatures with a beginning while God is eternal and the chasm/distance between us and God will always remain one that is beyond measure.

God gives us a share in many things because he chooses to do so. We do not become gods by our nature and their theory of progression. What God grants to man should never be confused with what man is and will always be. Man is God’s creation.
