JRKH,

Thank you for your response. It was very good. But there is something interesting in the article your referred to on tattoos. From the article I quote “Many commentators believe that this prohibition was intended to separate Israel from its Canaanite neighbors; some believe that the cuttings in the flesh and tattoo marks to which the verse refers were part of idolatrous Canaanite worship.” If the prohibition against tattoos then was to separate God’s chosen people from “pagans” because tattoos were part of idolatrous worship, can it not be said the same today? I would say, and like you I am not an expert, that a large percentage of tattoos are “part of idolatrous worship”. Should we not also be separate?
You make a good point here and one that, like the article says - needs to be considered when personally discerning whether to get a Tattoo or not.
For me - I see no reason to get a tattoo of any kind, but others do.
The one thing that I always thought was - One must be verrry careful about what one selects. As times - circumstances - beliefs change…one is stuck with that tattoo.
It is now confession time. I have a tattoo. I was young, stupid and I think drunk. And I admit the “EAGLE, GLOBE AND ANCHOR” is a cult symbol. SEMPER FI!
Not a bad cult to be a part of. I was not in the military myself but have always greatly admired the Marines…
Thank you for your service.

Hate to say this but still no real answer to the question! Aren’t we being “cafeteria” Bible believers when we scream about one thing and are silent about another. Doesn’t that weaken are arguement. Forget about government involvment. Isn’t wrong wrong whether government is involved or not. If you are going to use the Bible to condemn one thing should you not condemn all things condemn in the Bible with equal force. Are we to obey ALL of God’s Word? Is the prohibition against gay union in the Bible equal to the prohibition against tattoos equal to the prohition against eating pork? Where in the Bible does it say this “Word of God” you need to be militant about holding up but this “Word of God” you can ignore.
This is a very common misconception. Same-sex marriage is a good example. Everything must be looked at on a case by case basis and with the necessary factual historical background. Same-sex attraction is not condemned, but the Bible specifically speaks of a man laying with another man as with a woman. The context is this: The American Psychological Association had Homosexuality listed as a disorder until it was removed by non-scientific vote in 1973. Prior to 1996, same-sex marriage was not pushed onto the American public in a forceful way, and not until the last ten years has it appeared on State ballots. It was defeated in every case and twice in California. Prior to all this, gay couples could and did live however they wanted. I don’t see where marriage can be redefined, and the Church has studied the issue and has laid out all the details of what marriage means.

With all due respect to our Jewish neighbors, we are not Jews, and though Mary and Joseph were of the house and lineage of David, He had come as the Son of God. The thought that he was just a nice Jewish guy does not apply. Among Jews, there are the Ultra-Orthodox, the Orthodox, the Conservative and Reform. I recall one Jewish lady telling me that for her family, keeping a Kosher house was optional.

The issue of tattoos is also a recent phenomenon. Yes, one could always get tattoos, but many more stores opened over the last 10 years. As businessman, it is a mystery to me as to why. And how much money can these stores make? I mean once those in the area get a tattoo, they’re done. It’s not like buying milk every week.

The Teaching Authority of the Church did not initiate same-sex marriage. It did not put put the issue up for a vote, and it is not promoting it, but it is being imposed on people’s minds through advertising, movies and billboards as OK. Only judges and politicians have made it legal, not the majority of people.

The media, over a 40 year period, buy showing bad example, have promoted birth control, fornication, living together without marriage, and other immoral things, as being OK, average or normal. And the worst thing, they are promoting Indifference to sin. Example: I read the following about the movie The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: “For once, bisexuality is presented as no big deal.” Do you understand?

Sexual sin, including divorce and remarriage without obtaining an annulment, is the biggest problem facing the world today. The opening of Adult Bookstores, topless bars and strip clubs in the 1970s cost millions of dollars, not counting the money spent on lawyers to defend producers and sellers from legal action taken by “religious nuts,” including Catholics and other Christians. These people knew that sexual addiction would be the result. It was planned that way, because prior to 1968, it was like this: From a recent post I read on the internet. “Hey. Does not anybody remember when porn was considered dirty and hard to get?” That’s the way it was.

No one I know of woke up one day and said, “You know, we should have stores all over the country selling hardcore porn.”

The Church condemns all sin, with due consideration for the individual circumstances of the individual sinner, like addiction.

But the point I’m making is when some radicals want to force their beliefs on others and start screaming about their “rights,” then the Church reacts. They started it.

Peace,
Ed

anrmenchaca47,

Tattoos are also CLEARLY AND EXPLICITLY prohibited in Leviticus. Check this out. Leviticus 19:28, “Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am the Lord.”

Am I to obey God (I am the Lord)? Now if The Church tells me God has reconsidered the issue and it is now OK to get inked I can deal with that. But until that time it sure looks like God don’t like it!
Yeah…I saw that one just right now.

But, hey as long as you do obey God…

Now…which of the two do you think is more inappropriate? tattooing our bodies with ink? or condoning gay union?

Most of Chapter 20 of Leviticus deals with different types of fornication. Starting on verse 10 and ending on 21. The difference is the penalty of performing such acts…which is being “put to death.” Although the 19:28 does say “do not…” by the Lord, It would be reasonable to assume that former is more severe than the latter making gay union a grave sin according to the book of Leviticus.

Devil’s advocate:

What about federal subsidies for pig farms?

I think you are correct and some sins are ignored or downplayed.
However, all sins are not equal, especially when it does harm to another.

While the sins associated to pride are bad, they do not compare to murder or theft.

Many would argue that murder and theft ARE sins of Pride…

I was always told that we were bound to Old Testament Law only when they had to do with faith and morals. No sure where that is, but would love to know.

if i understand leviticus forbids tattoo as in mourning for the dead something that the pagans did. The verse doesnt mean tatto as in a 21 centuary context

The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

The real question should be does a tatoo give that temple more glory or less.

I think that most of the time the answer would be less and that most of the time–yes getting a tatoo is sinful.

So then I’d but tatoos on par with obesity,
both do not treat the body temple with due respect
Even worse, is combining the two, tatoos don’t age well
The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

i could ask the same question on makeup, do it give your body more glory or less? Or maybe female trousers? Im sure that by the time we are through so many things we bear the sin tag and the ladies will begin to complain of male dormination.

The easiest answer to this is to let the individual make the determination in most cases. That way nobody “dominates” the other…

This is perhaps the best reason for the Church to not make a firm teaching but rather to provide guidelines.

JRKH,

I have no problem with The Church’s authority to “Bind and Loose”. And I am cool with the circumcised and pork thing. But as I asked Rick C, what about things like tattoos? If The Church has not come out with a “teaching” does the Old Testment still apply? And work just as hard against tattoos as we do against gay union.
The restriction on Tattoos was explicit under the old covenant. The old covenant does not apply to Christians but to Jews. Christians have entered into a new covenant.

The new covenant actually raises the bar, not speaking directly to the issue of tatoos, but of the sins of pride and vanity and of the virtues of humility and poverty. When we decorate our bodies to be noticed, to show off, or to “express ourselves”, we break the new covenant prohibition against pride and vanity.

The old Covenant forbids tatoos explicitly. The new covenant does not address tatoos explicity but the greater sins of pride and vanity, and conversly the virtues of humility and poverty.

What any individual who may or may not be aware of this teaching does in their personal life should be seperated from the teaching of the Church which is clear.

very true

Tattoos are evil, even their Bible says that. If you are Catholic, you should’nt trust the Bible, the Bible is evil because it tells you you can own slave, kill, plunder, pillage, etc. The Lord of the Bible I believe is Satan. The Bible nowhere says Christ is God. Protest-ants, Jews, Freemasons, and schismatics love and read the Bible, all those people are of Satan. So if heretics and Christ rejecters love the Bible, we should avoid it like a talking fire (Exodus 3:2-6).

If someone prayed and asked Jesus if it was His will if he got a tatoo or not could you imagine Jesus saying “Yes–get a tatoo”.

Could you imagine Jesus saying “It’s up to you–I don’t mind one way or the other.”

Could you imagine the pope saying the same thing?

Exactly how does a tatoo glorify God?

how does makeup glorify God?
Makeup itself is quite neutral…How it is used (the intent) is what will matter.
Makeup - modestly used, generally speaks to a person who takes good care of themselves. They wish to “look good” but not in a “provocative” or “alluring” or “scandalous” way.
It gives a good example to others in the proper and acceptable use of such things.
What about female trousers?
The same is true here.
Trousers are not so much the problem as the “fit”. Is the fit modest or not. Does it give scandal or not.

In both of the above, a person can be seeking to “look their best” without becoming an “occasion to sin”.

We basically regard laws against tatoos, wearing certain clothes, shaving parts of your beard, ect. the same way we regard circumcison. Circumcision was the way of entry into the Old Covenant like Baptism is for the New. These laws were a way for the ancient Israelites to distinguish between “us” and “them.” Jew and Gentile. However, the New Covenant is extended to the Gentiles and there is no distinguishing between “us” and “they.” This was the St. Peter and Pauls’ issue that needed to be adressed to the Jewish converts “vigorous to the Law of Moses.”

Read:

Jeremiah 31:31, 1 Corinthians 7:17-20, Acts 15, etc.

In the same way, we are to follow the example of Christ’s mercy and not persecute the homosexual community for their sins (John 8:7.) However that is not to say that we condone the act or marriage of homosexual relationships.
