Probably the best version out there is the Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition ie. RSVCE. Ignatius Press carries it. The New American Bible ie. NAB is okay, but not the best. There is a new RSVCE edition out by OSV that is set up for a one year reading program. It looks quite good. Also the NAB is out in the Catholic Answer Bible and the new Catholic Teen Bible (also by OSV). I do wish they would put those two out in RSVCE editions. Maybe Catholic Answers would consider doing that? Hint, hint…

These, along with the Ignatius Study Bible commentary and Navarre Bible commentary, are great resources. Catholics can learn the Bible and debate with any fundamentalist out there. I encourage you to check these out and use them. It is our book after all.

Thank You Sir. I am almost sure that our Church uses the RSVCE for Mass.

But at home I use the Douay-Rheins Bible.
NT printed in 1582 and the OT printed in 1609. My $99.00 two-volume set has great commentary - many from the Doctors of the Church.

I wish I had a Navarre Study Bible.

The Challoner revision of the Douay-Rheims is the best Bible available. The RSV-CE is okay, and I like the Navarre and Ignatius Study Bibles that use the RSV-CE.

The NAB is ****. I have two copies of it and haven’t opened them in years. There are so many bad translations and misleading/wrong notes that I would highly recommend that people not read it. Besides, the prose is awful.

The only translation approved for use at Mass in the U.S. is a version based on the NAB with Revised New Testament and Psalms, but with some revisions from the Vatican to remove “inclusive” language when such is not supported in the original languages. (This means that the version we use at Mass is only available in the form of a Lectionary, not as a normal Bible).

The Haydock study edition of the Douay-Rheims is supposed to be excellent. I think it usually runs about $100-$120 for the two volumes.

Hmm, seems like I’ve discovered a feature of the forum software. I didn’t think the word that the software censored was that bad. It was four letters long, but it wasn’t one of the words usually considered to be profanity (it’s a synonym for ‘junk’ or ‘stuff’ and begins with c).

I think the Jerusalem Bible is the best.

The word ‘best’ certainly seems to be a funny thing.

The old Jerusalem is pretty good. I am aware of the NAB’s many shortcomings. I expect I will be old by the time they get a decent revision of it. If they ever do. But it is the one we have to work with most right now. How odd they pushed Bible reading, but then neglecting to provide a readable translation suitable for memorizing. But the notes in the Teen Bible by OSV are good.

I used the same 4-letter word and the same censoring asterisks appeared. I don’t remember c___ being among those 7 words of George Carlin.
