Is the vow of abstinence really that important?

in this thread, it is. the initial article hinges on the premise that mary had taken that vow before meeting the angel. before being bethroted to joseph.

Bethrothal doesnt mean sex. Consumation of marriage normally begins when the couple starts living together.

WHY WOULD MARY MAKE A VOW OF ABSTINENCE BEFORE MEETING THE ANGEL???

When I was in school the priest said that it was known that the saviour would come from a virgin and it was common for women to make a vow of virginity. I don’t know where he got that info but that is what was told me.

didn’t Mary already bring our saviour into the world, so why would another virgin be needed to bring our saviour into the world?
