I just had an interesting inspiration and wonder if any of you guys have thought about this before:
In the same way that Paul received his Gospel directly from Jesus and spread it in conjuction with the validation of Peter, so also new devotions and doctrines are brought into the Treasury of the Church in conjunction with the validation of the seat of Peter.
Paul only saw Peter once for about two weeks, three years after his conversion, and then didn’t see any of the other apostles at all for another 14 years. Paul’s gospel - his message about Christ, God and the spiritual life - is a message he received directly from Jesus himself. But how did Christians back then know to trust Paul’s Gospel? Because he was approved and validated by Peter.
I see Paul as the forerunner (and true justification) for the creation of new doctrines and devotions that the Lord and our Lady deem to be spread into the Church at a specific time for the benefit of all.
There are so many examples of these things happening:
-The Sacred Heart of Jesus was revealed to specific individuals and then validated by the seat of Peter.
-The Rosary was revealed to specific individuals and then validated by the seat of Peter.
-The teachings of Our Lady of Fatima too, come about the same way and then are validated.
-And many more…
Isn’t this encouraging?
This is encouraging to me because, as a new Catholic convert, I have had a little uneasiness with these “newer” devotions of the Church that come later than when the Early Church Fathers were around. But now, I truly know that God has been leading the Church in these new devotions, and the fact that He left a Biblical example by Paul to encourage us in the faith that the trustworthy formula for having faith in these “new” devotions and doctrines is if they are validated by the seat of Peter.
