Hello-

I’m really interested in reading more about biblical types/archetypes and was hoping someone could suggest a good book that goes in depth on this topic in particular. Is there one volume that covers them all? Thanks in advance for your help!

I don’t know of one book that specifically deals with it, but a lot of books by Scott Hahn are very helpful in this regard. I’m thinking in particular of “Hail, Holy Queen” and “The Lambs Supper.” If I’m not mistaken, “Beginning Apologetics 7: How To Read The Bible’” has a good chapter on it as well.

Thank you for your response - I will look into the Scott Hahn books.

Scott Hahn is probably the leading guy right now, though he doesn’t really deal with typology any more than is strictly necessary for his books. It’s disappointing, really, that there are no good Catholic references on this topic.

There are a few things, though:
**That Moses Thing
The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church
Beginning Apologetics 6: Mary
EWTN Q&A (lots of brief Mary-stuff here)
My post on the Eucharist

**There are also certain principles that help you to ge to the spiritual sense of Scripture, like large bodies of water representing sin and mountains representing proximity to God, though they aren’t propertly called typology - that said, if you pay attention you’ll find all kinds of gems.

God Bless,
RyanL

RyanL-

Thank you - I really liked “That Moses Thing” and your post on the Eucharist. I’m going to print it out and go over it all myself. I’m looking forward to that!

You’d think someone in the Catholic church would have written a book on typology - it’s such an interesting topic.

Thanks for your help!

RyanL–

Your Eucharist post was dynamite. Very good job.

Just to add to the discussion: types that you probably know, but maybe not:
  1. The Ark of the Covenant → Mary
  2. The Bronze Serpent → Christ
  3. Moses and Elijah on Moutaintops → Transfiguration
  4. Creation → Christ’s Baptism (Father, “Word”, Sprit)
  5. Abraham sacrificing Isaac → Crucifixion.
  6. Moses → Superman. (Err… )
Anyway, I’m having a hard time thinking of others, those are the “basic” ones.

I’m glad you guys liked it. :o

Further types:
  • Noah’s ark (and basically any other boat) - the Church
  • Peter’s boat (the Barque of Peter) - the Church (Luke 5:3)
  • The flood - Baptism (1 Pet 3:20-21)
  • Crossing the Red Sea - Baptism
**Here I’d like to take a brief sidestep to talk about the large bodies of water = sin for a moment (which I mentioned above). Like I said, it’s not properly called typology, but it is very useful in discerning the spiritual sense of Scripture. With the crossing of the Red Sea, God’s chosen ones are brought through the “sea of sin” by Moses (Christ type) to the promised land (eventually). Likewise, in the great flood all were lost (large body of water = sin, and consequently spiritual death) except those who were in the ark (Church type).
**You can see this same kind of thing with Christ walking on the water (above sin), the Apostles being told to be fishers of men (pulling men out of their sin and into “the boat”), and Peter (the first Pope) walking on water, starting to sink on his own, but supernaturally aided by Christ to continue above the water.
  • Adam - Christ (note: thorns (John 19:5), sweat (Luk 22:44) and death (Heb 2:9)). It is interesting to consider this against the list of curses placed on Adam and how Christ undoes each one:
    1. The ground is cursed: the creation is subjected to the bondage of decay.
      2. Through painful toil or worrisomeness, you will eat of the ground.
      3. The ground will produce thorns and thistles for you.
      4. You will eat the plants of the field.
      5. By the sweat of your brow, you will eat your food.
      6. You will return to the ground; you will die a physical death.
    2. Death passed upon all men spiritually. Sin entered into the world. Sin passed upon all men. Judgment came upon all men to condemnation.
      8. Adam and all mankind lost the right to the tree of life.
      9. Adam was driven out from the presence of God. Mankind was separated from God.
  • King David and King Solomon - Christ
  • Abel - Christ (Heb 12:24)
  • Isaac - Christ (Also note that the ram Abraham sacrifices is caught in a thorn bush **wrapped **around its head).
More “spiritual illustration types”:
Leprosy / Leaven - sin (the Bible kinda’ clubs you over the head with this one)
Linen - holiness / sanctity
  1. Wool - commonness / secular
    1. Hope this helps.

      God Bless,
      RyanL

JESUS FULFILLS COVENANTS

(OR FRUITION/COMPLETION/PERFECTION)

St. Matthew 5: 17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. 18 Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.”

St. Matthew 12: 42 At the judgment the queen of the south will arise with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here.

St. Luke 24: 25 And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! 26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures.

St. Luke 24: 44 He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. 46 And he said to them, "Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day 47 and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning

I pulled these two from around the 50s or 40s. There is much more over there.

Biblical Passages of Old Testament Promises Fulfilled (fruition) Through Jesus

WORD

John 1: 1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. “

John 1: 14 “And the Word became flesh, and made His dwelling among us.”

ADAM

I Corinthians 15: 45-47 “So, too, it is written, “The first man, Adam, became a living being,” the last Adam a life giving spirit (John 5: 21-29)…The first man was from the earth, earthly; the second man, from heaven.”

From the Basic Bible thread

EVE

II Corinthians 11: 3 “But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts may be corrupted from a sincere [and pure] commitment to Christ.”

I Timothy 2: 13-15 “For Adam was formed first, then Eve. Further, Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed. But she will be saved through motherhood, provided women persevere in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.”

Again, this is from the thread Basic Bible

NOAH

I Peter 3: 20-21 “…who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water. This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

MELCHIZEDEK

Hebrews 6: 19-20 “This we have as an anchor of the soul, sure and firm which reaches into the interior behind the veil, where Jesus has entered on our behalf as forerunner, becoming high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”

WOW! Thanks for all the time and effort, guys! I’ve got a lot to chew on here! :clapping:

Hebrews 10: 9 Then he says, “Behold, I come to do your will.” He takes away the first to establish the second. 10 By this “will,” we have been consecrated through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Hebrews 10: 28 Anyone who rejects the law of Moses is put to death without pity on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Do you not think that a much worse punishment is due the one who has contempt for the Son of God, considers unclean the covenant-blood by which he was consecrated, and insults the spirit of grace?

Hebrews 8: 5 They worship in a copy and shadow of the heavenly sanctuary, as Moses was warned when he was about to erect the tabernacle. For he says, “See that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”

Exodus 25: 40 See that you make them according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.

Exodus 25: 40 See that you make them according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.

Revelation 21: 21 The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made from a single pearl; and the street of the city was of pure gold, transparent as glass. 22 I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God almighty and the Lamb. 23 The city had no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gave it light, and its lamp was the Lamb.

Col. 2: 16 Let no one, then, pass judgment on you in matters of food and drink or with regard to a festival or new moon or Sabbath. 17 These are shadows of things to come; the reality belongs to Christ.

THE REALITY BELONGS TO CHRIST!!!

Hebrews 1: 1 In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; 2 in these last days, he spoke to us through a son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe, 3 who is the refulgence of his glory, the very imprint of his being, and who sustains all things by his mighty word. When he had accomplished purification from sins, he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 as far superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. 5 For to which of the angels did God ever say: “You are my son; this day I have begotten you”? Or again: “I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me”?

Hebrews 9: 8 In this way the holy Spirit shows that the way into the sanctuary had not yet been revealed while the outer tabernacle still had its place. 9 This is a symbol of the present time, in which gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the worshiper in conscience.

Matthew 2: 4 Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: 6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.’”

Romans 5: 14 But death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin after the pattern of the trespass of Adam, who is the type of the one who was to come.

Luke 24: 44 He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures.
