I’m looking for a book that deals only with biblical typology in a catholic viewpoint. Any suggestions?
Thanks

I would like one too since I do not believe a Protestant book on types is going to have much to say about types of the Eucharist.

Funny that you should mention that. Most non-Catholics interested in types affirm Old Testament ante-types refer to the Eucharist. They stumble when they hold the Eucharist as a symbol (only).

Symbols don’t point to symbols, but rather, to fulfillment.

There are some good non-Catholic books on typology available.

Here are links to a couple of popular works:
Interpreting Symbols and Types

Study of the Types

While I have not read the above texts, I am reading
Typology of Scripture

It is not an easy read, however, as it was written about 150 years ago by a Presbyterian clergyman and the language is more like David Copperfield than today’s English.

On the other hand, it is a fantastic resource for the history of Typology. Typology fell out of use for the 17th and 18th centuries due to gross overuse and eventual chaos, as there were no restrictions mandated.

For example, EVERY male figure in the OT was used (at one time or another) as a prefigurment of the Christ. It got to be VERY chaotic, with people justifying bizarre behaviors from scripture. Pharoh as Christ? King Ahab as Christ?

Typology made a comeback about 150 years ago and is gather steam even now. History may repeat itself.

Peace in Christ…Salmon

There was a guy who used to write for the old THE CATHOLIC ANSWER magazine before it changed formats recently, who used to write really good articles on typology from a catholic point of view. That was around 1999-2001 who apparently had written a hanbook on typology froma Catholic point of view but I cannot for life of me remember his name. I remember one article he wrote where he mentioned the Tree of Life in Garden of Eden as a type of the eucharist.

I appreciate your replies but I’m still looking for that one book for us diehard Catholics. The books suggested did not fit the bill and if anyone knows the name of the man mentioned who used to write articles for Catholic Answer that could be a starting point. Perhaps someone could plug the ear of one of our best apologist that such a book on typology is needed.

thanks

Damasus Winzen - Pathways in Scripture

Mark Shea - Making Sense out of Scripture

Scott Hahn - Scripture Matters

I also like reading the Church Doctors like Augustine’s expositions on the Psalms.

look for a luthern book on types for Lord’s Supper references.

I would expect types related to the passover would apply maybe.

Typology of Scripture, Fairbain, Patrick.

unless I am mistaken there is some stuff in this above book on it.

Contact “BibleReader”. He seems to be the resident Typology expert. From one of his previous threads, I have a feeling he was the one who wrote the Typology articles in the Catholic Answers Magazine - This Rock(?).

Notworthy

This is a book that doesn’t focus exclusively on typology, but it’s very good and has a lot of typology. It’s by a man named Steve Kellmeyer. He’s completely faithful to the Magisterium (which I’m not sure is true of BibleReader), and a couple of his books are on the recommended (or required, can’t remember which) list for students at Franciscan University of Steubenville. He offered a biblical typology class, and it might come out again, but I’m not sure when. One great thing about Kellmeyer is that he really brings in the early church fathers whenever possible.

You can get information about the class here:

The book, Bible Basics, is here:
