Anyone here like big band music? To be honest, most of what I know and have is the very common stuff, but my resources, and lack of radio stations airing it (you need satellite) prevent me from getting much more.:crying: Who are your faves, or you favorite songs? Most romantic or memorable? I wouldn’t know what to pick for a favorite because I am always loving what I am hearing at the moment.

I’m a big Glenn Miller fan, along with snippets of others from the big band era. We are fortunate to have a great band in the area (15 piece brass big band) mostly formed from NASA employess. I have been to 3-4 of their dances and they are great. I also like ballroom dance.

Love:
Artie Shaw
Benny Goodman
Tommy Dorsey
Harry James
I grew up on big band because it was what my parents listened to. I hated it when I was a teenager but have grown into it in my dotage.

I love the song “Skylark” but have been unable to find it. Anyone know where I might find it?
I’ve purchased numerous CDs of big band because I can’t find it on the radio.

Artie Shaw–he cracked me up when he was on the Ken Burn’s Jazz Series. He busted a little on Glen Miller saying that band never made a mistake. And if you never make a mistake it means you are not trying. You are not playing at the edge of your abilities. And if you are not doing that, it’s BORING!

One of my all time favorites is “In the Mood” by Glenn Miller. If we are at a wedding, or any kind of gathering where there is dancing, if this song starts, my husband immediately stands up and takes my hand.

In The Mood is definitely good, but have you heard Moonlight Serenade? How about The Girl Next Door by Sinatra? Very romantic! Sounds like you all are pretty much listening to what I am. I didn’t grow up on it. I started hearing bits and pieces back in high school, and was hooked instantly. Incedentally, does anyone remember the Hooked On Swing records? It was shortly after they stopped those that I got hooked. How ironic.

When I grew up in the 1970’s the one thing that I always liked was when my parents would bring out the old 78’s and I’d listen to them with excitement. Since both of my parents are gone, I kept my favs.
I really like pop music dated before 1985.

I especially liked the 78’s from WWII and before. I used to own some 1 sided 78’s from the 1900’s to 1910.

Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Woody Herman are perhaps the greatest big bands in terms of longevity and combining the elements of arrangments (big band) and freedom (improvisation) inherent in jazz. The big bands were my entry into an eventual love of jazz.

BTW, Mary Lou Williams was a famous arranger and featured star in an early big band (Andy Kirk)…what’s interesting about Mary Lou is that she eventually converted to Catholicism and wrote some interesting liturgical/jazz pieces…

Here’s a web site if anyone’s interested in MLW

I have always enjoyed Big Band music, it’s what my Grandparents listened to. My grandma would listen to it on her little radio at home and blast it in her care for a Sunday morning drive after Mass. I have great memories of going out to breakfast after Mass with my Grandma and cousins. I love it all, just listen to my Satellite radio. I enjoyed it in my teen years too, even before the Gap commercials:)

Duke Ellington is my all time fav

I love Big Band. I try to get out to ear some of the local contemporary ones as much as possible (which unfortunately isn’t often enough.)

Well, who’s version of it? It’s been done by so many people and a standard which ought to be quite readily available on any number of disks.

yehoodi.com used to have a web streaming station.

I love Big Band and Traditional jazz. Every year Sacramento has the traditional Jazz Festival over the Memorial Day weekend. It is the largest in the nation! You can hear Big Bands 10 hours a day if you only want the Big Bands. Besides that you can get any other traditional band music including Dixieland and “Torch Singers” The Sacramento Jazz Society has a website with lots of information and enough links to keep you going for days. I recommend going to www.sacjazz.org and after reading the home page click on “Jazz links” One good link is the Riverwalk Jazz link. They have a recording studio located in San Antonio and put on a weekly “traditional jazz” radio show on public radio. They will give the times and artists on their website. 👍

I heard it for the 1st time in the movie Swing Shift with Goldie Hawn and Kirt (Kirk ?) Russell. That is the haunting version I want to find. It’s a female singing it.
