Okay guys, I need advice. I’m 20 yrs old … I’m a currently a full-time Ameri-Corps volunteer in Washington D.C. My job is teaching children to read in the DC public schools … its a tough job, 60 hours a week, for $145/wk, but I like it.

So, here’s the problem: the organization I work for is broken up into five teams … (I’m on the literacy team) … and one of the teams teaches an HIV/AIDS prevention curriculum. There’s an abstinence component, but from what little I’ve seen of it, I think there’s a heavy emphasis on condom use for “safe” sex.

I told my boss I wouldn’t have anything to do with this program, and she said I wouldn’t come near it. And I haven’t. But I still feel a little off. I mean, its not like I’m getting rich off of this, and I am doing positive stuff. On the other hand, I’m wearing the same uniform as the people teaching middle schoolers how to use condoms. I feel like it might be a serious scandal; and maybe I’m co-operating with evil.

I don’t know what to do. My sister says I’m being scrupulous. If I have to quit this job to be loyal to Christ, then I’ll do it tomorrow.

It seems to me that people in nursing, the military, and so on would experience the same problem. You are doing something good, and being in a similar job doesn’t mean that you agree with everything everybody or anybody else might advocate. This is just my 2 cents. Do you know a good priest or religious who might be of help?

I think you should try to post your question in the “Ask and Apologist” section. It is the type of question which would go to Fr. Serpa, who seems to be very good with these types of moral issues.

Hi,
I think Christ may be giving you an oppertunitity to be a light to some of these children. thank about it. if you bailed and if all the other Christians who worked their bailed, it would be up to pardon the term “pagans” or unbelievers if you perfer that word, to educate these children. Christ’s lights are everywhere and they are most evident in the darkest places. maybe you’ll be given a chance to encourage some of these students in the truth about sex. maybe God has you there for a reason. I wouldn’t leave just yet if I were you. Pray about it. Go to adoration and ask God to use if He so wills it.
a warning though, if you ask to be used, you WILL get used, so be ready!
we are the light of the world! and the salt of the earth! what does salt do, it irratates when rubbed in and brings out the true flavor of things! Don’t miss out on a chance to be a saint! at least, that’s what I seem to be feeling the Holy Spirit has lead me to say to you 🙂
