big Hindu holiday?

Yesterday I got stuck in traffic on the main drag a few miles from my house where there is a Hindu temple. It was after dark, and apparently there was a VERY BIG event taking place at the temple. There were large numbers of people leaving and crossing that main drag to get to their cars in a parking lot across the street. There were two police cars and officers helping to direct traffic and keep pedestrians safe.

I know very little about the Hindu religion, but living in this area over the past several years I have learned about a celebration called Dewali. I remembered that it was in the early fall (October) in the past. Could this be the reason so many people had come to the temple last night?

Perhaps someone can offer some information?
