Howdy Everyone-

I have a friend, good Catholic girl, who recently married a good Catholic guy. They are mid to early 30’s, and looking to start a family. She has depression and anxiety, and is taking medication for that. She was on the pill too, but recently got off. They are still using protection too because of the concerns with getting pregnant while on her meds. They would like her to try and taper off the meds before getting pregnant.

Two questions:
  1. We both know and understand the Church’s position on birth control. Is there ever an instance (perhaps this) where it is not something that is a sin and needs to be confessed?
  2. Anyone else out there with mental health concerns and trying to get pregnant? What did you do? Did you get off your meds?
I’m concerned for her. She’s my friend. I want her to be happy, and I know that includes being right with God. I know she also wants kids. I don’t want her to crash, though, and wonder if maybe she’s not supposed to have kids and just stay healthy.

Help & God Bless!

No. There is no such instance. Contraception is *instrinsically *disordered. That means it is disordered in all situations.

What is not wrong is avoiding pregnancy when there is a just reason. Medication that could be harmful, serious medical/psychological issues such as depression, etc, are certainly just reasons.

The moral way to avoid pregnancy is through observing the woman’s cycle and abstaining during the fertile time. This is Natural Family Planning. NFP.

There are many methods, the most common being Sympto-Thermal, Billings Ovulation Model, Creighton Model, and Marquette Model. All of these have websites, just Google them.

Marquette might be one your friend should research seriously. It uses Creighton (mucus observation) and adds a fertility monitor. There are a couple of folks on this board that use Marquette and are very happy with the high-tech aspect of the monitor.

As to question 2, that is best discussed with a doctor and/or therapist/psychologist.

Please do not solicit medical advice on CAF. Your friend needs medical and spiritual guidance from professionals who are familiar with her mental health history.
