Hi,
I’m re-accepting Catholicism into my life but I have a question. I’m going on birth control soon, strictly because my cycles cause me extreme pain and cause me to miss a lot of school and the pill will help regulate this. I’m a virgin and I’m not sexually active, nor do I intend to be until marraige. However, is this taking of a contraceptive still a sin? If so, how can I reconcile it with my faith? My body truly needs the medicine as my entire body falls extremely ill when I have my period. Is this a lesson?
No, taking contraception is not a sin if it is used for medical reasons, according to Humanae Vitae, which states :
*Lawful Therapeutic Means
15. On the other hand, the Church does not consider at all illicit the use of those therapeutic means necessary to cure bodily diseases, even if a foreseeable impediment to procreation should result there from—provided such impediment is not directly intended for any motive whatsoever. (19) *
You don’t have to reconcile it to your faith. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. The only reason it would be a sin, is if you use it for birth control only. That’s not what you’re doing so it’s perfectly fine for you to go by the counsel of your doctor.
This is merely a lesson of being human. Some people have to take antihypertensives to control their blood pressure. Some people have to take insulin to control their diabetes. Some people have to take beta blockers to control their blood pressure and heart rate. You just need contraceptives to control horrible periods. It’s allowed and it’s up to you.
You can always go on them, get your symptoms and ailness in control, and research with your doctor other ways to control it in the meantime.
If in doubt, always ask your priest
