A definite no-no. God killed a guy in the Bible for it. His name was Onan, (Gen. 38:8–10) . Anyway, it renders the sexual act not open to life.

Genesis315:

I would argue that God killed Onan for disobeying a direct command, not for the method of disobedience.

In any case, yes, withdrawal is sinful.

Hmmm. I have always seen it explained the other way because failure to complete the duty he was commanded to do by Judah was usually punished by public humiliation, and not death. While here, he was slewn for violating the natural law. I think that’s how it’s explained in one of the tracts on this site. Oh well.

The point is really moot anyway because coitus interruptus is a grave sin as has been mentioned.

Please note, that the church does not teach that birth control is a sin. Birth control, properly understood, is nothing more than the spacing and planning of your children.

There are moral and immoral means to space and plan a family.

The example you gave is contraception. The Church teaches that ALL contraception is disordered— a sin.

If, for serious reasons, a Catholic couple determines that they need to postpone pregnancy they can choose a moral means of doing so: complete or periodic abstinence.

The reason ciotus interruptus is a grave disorder is because it purposefully separates the procreative from the unitive and pleasure components of marital relations.

Church teaches that martal relations involves sexual intercourse as the paramount activity; to engage in relations without that as the intended goal is to gravely disorder the marital act.

One, the Levirite law had not been handed down at the time and thus could in no way apply. However, we do see that the punishment for violating it was just humiliation.

Second, we see that the words used in Genisis asher ashah (sp?), I don’t have the book in front of me, refer to the act itself and not a movement of disobedience. Hence, it was an incomplete rendering of the act for his pleasure. Remember he went ahead with intercourse when he didn’t want to produce kids and then changed the way it works.

It is important to view children as God sees them, not as the world/Catholic Creeds tells us we should. Having said that, the BIBLE does not forbid contraception. Contraception, by it’s definition, is the merely opposite of conception. It is not the act of contraception itself that determines whether it is wrong or right. As we learned from Onan, it is the motivation behind the contraception that determines if it is right or wrong. If a person is practicing contraception because they will have more for themselves, then it is wrong. If a person is practicing contraception in order to temporarily delay children until they are more mature and more financially and spiritually prepared, then it is acceptable to use contraception for a time. Again, it all comes back to your motivation.

If contraception is ok, why did every denomination get it wrong up until 1930? The fact is, not only does the bible condemn contraception as seen in Genesis 38, but every Christian from the early years to Martin Luther and Calvin upheld this view.

Also completely unrelated to Church teachings is the reality that it is one of the LEAST effective methods of family planning. I’m living proof of another ineffective method, the rythmn method.

NFP is far better for predicting fertile periods that may lead to pregnancy, abstinence, and in some cases help detect gynaecological disorders.

God Bless

PS you are a living example of the love of God 🙂

Hey, we’re glad you are here. Wouldn’t be the same without you! BTW, did your parents actually tell you that?

Gospel101 - When posting on a Catholic website, you really ought to point out that you are not Catholic.
Here we have an example of the protestant version of doctrine - personal opinion presented as fact. Here’s a question - where does the Bible say contraception is acceptable?

Actually, contraception (popular and common is the use of the many wonderful slimes goos prophylactics, rubbers, pills etc for the purpose of preventing pregnancy while using.

Selfishness has nothing to do with it. If you read the hebrew text the verbage specifically talks about the act itself in perversity. You can always read through Leviticus and see what God wanted as punishment for just being selfish and not raising up kids for you brother was to be. If you NEED to delay children for serious reason then NFP is availalbe. The big difference is that you are not changing the act with NFP the act is the same act. When you utilize a contraceptive then you change the way the act works as God has designed it.
