Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today is the date on which the Legion of Mary was “born”. The first meeting was held on this date, Sept. 7, 1921 in Dublin, when a small group who had consecrated themselves to Jesus through Mary met with Frank Duff and their parish priest to pray and discern together how God wanted them to LIVE their consecration.

They prayed first to the Holy Spirit and then prayed the Rosary before a Statue of Our Lady of Grace. Someone had put flowers and two candles in front of the statue, and that same format is kept today after 95 years. Small groups gather with pastors or deacons as their Spiritual Directors and pray to the Holy Spirit and then pray Five Decades of the Rosary to begin every weekly meeting. From that humble beginning, the Legion has grown and spread to almost every country in the world, as the largest Lay Apostolate in the Catholic Church with millions of members.

If you would like to learn more about the Founder Servant of God Frank Duff, and the other two Legionaries whose causes have been introduced in Rome see HERE

If you’d like to learn more about the Legion of Mary in general, see HERE

Tomorrow is the Feast of Mary’s Nativity. It is almost as if God was giving His Mother a special “birthday gift” in beginning this Legion for her. What better gift than to set the hearts of her children on Fire for love of her Son and have them sharing His Love with others as she did on this earth!
