How do we know that where the Church of the Nativity is really was where Jesus was born?

We don’t.

How can that be? isn’t there a star under the main altar marking the place where he was born?

After Jesus died, Christians would occasionally gather at the site of his cricifixion, and at the site of his birth. The Romans were wary of this new cult, and came up with a perfect way to stop the Christians from gathering.

They built pagan temples over each site. Think of it. In order to worship Jesus, you had to appear to worship a pagan idol.

Unfortunately, it outraged the Christians, and everyone knew what was under these temples.

When St. Helena travelled to the Holy Land, it was quite easy for her to determine where Christ was born, and where He had died. the temples were torn down, and churches were built.

Ok it would be easy for them to know where he died but how did they know where in Bethlahem he was born?

The Blessed Mother was still alive when Christ was crucified and when He rose and ascended to heaven. I’m sure she never forgot where she gave birth and could have either shown or told the apostles.
