I have recently taken an interest in Stoicism, at least some aspects of it Especially in how it has influenced Christianity and how it can help us to cope with our life’s challenges.
Christian Stoicism was popular in Victorian times, especially among English speaking people who already valued not getting over emotional.
Then the concept of being real an authentic with ones feelings (as opposed to repressing them), along with the rise of psychotherapy, made being calm and collected suspect.
Methinks the pendulum is swinging back.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could find a happy medium?
I think the danger with stoicism is that one can become too passive and calmly accept the worst injustices so i would say that is the inherent problem with the philosophy.
My son, when he was about 6 just loved that show…we had to limit him a bit as he started growling at everyone and making muscle poses…making people wonder what the heck was wrong with this kid! . He’d growl at his two year old sister and make her cry!
