Recently it was announced at Mass our beloved Bishop Gossman would soon retire. Please pray for him and for an orthodox successor in our diocese.

[RomanRite, could I ask what parish you assist at? I’m in the Raleigh diocese as well and always on the lookout for orthodox folks around my age in the area :). I go to UNC–officially my parish is St Andrew’s in Apex, but I find myself at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic in Cary more often than not these days. I love the Roman Rite (as I sense you do) but only when it’s free of sacrilege–hard to find in Raleigh, to put it very lightly.]

On a more related note, we do need your prayers in Raleigh for a solid bishop. I’ve personally been in quite unfortunate scuffles with many a liberal priest in this diocese, and the situation isn’t good. The heterodox clergy are put in the huge, wealthy parishes; the orthodox priests are hidden away where only God can find them. I respect Bishop Gossman now, but I thank the Lord for the age limit. He’s already submitted his retirement letter, and has stated that Rome “will accept my retirement the day they receive it.” April 1, Kyrie eleison.

👋 Hello Danny!

I’m a member of St. Anthony’s in Southern Pines. Our pastor is very orthodox and the Mass is reverently celebrated.

I actually live in the Charlotte Diocese, but the local parish is fairly liberal and noncompliant. My mother and I are blessed to have found our current parish, which is about 20 minutes from our home.

I’m very sorry you’ve had to suffer through modernism and irreverence. You do know Sacred Heart in Dunn celebrates the Tridentine Mass monthly? (This Easter Sunday!)

I think I’ve met Fr Ingham down there–is he an older man, tallish, with white hair?

I know about Fr Parkerson and his Tridentine–we’re quite lucky to have a priest like him in the diocese. He actually celebrates the old rite about 4 times during the average week, too.

I used to be quite an outspoken critic of Bishop Gossman until a series of events last May-June, including his approval of the indult Mass in Dunn. That helped things a bit ;).

Yes, that’s our Fr. Ingham. 🙂
I’ve not met Fr. Parkerson in person before, but plan to this Sunday. I’ll be received into the Church the evening before. I cannot wait!

I must admit I don’t know much about Bishop Gossman, other than his liberal nature. I hope his successor will be much more conservative.

I doubt I’ll go to Fr Parkerson’s Mass this Sunday, but it should be good. He’s been working with the choir to celebrate a missa cantata, and he’s getting better at pronouncing the Latin phrases too. (Are your family being received into the Church as well?)

I wrote a slightly infamous letter to the bishop last year that demonstrated my displeasure with the liturgical practices in the diocese fairly well. I wrote it when I was rather angry, and meant to do everything I promised in it. You can take a look at it here if you want: unc.edu/~ndkumar/letter.htm. I sent a copy to every priest in the diocese and about a dozen influential parishes…some of the people on this forum may have actually read it; it found its way to a couple traditionalist news sites.

I’m in contact with a group of similarly orthodox parishioners and a couple canon lawyers who are filing formal charges to Rome against the bishop. I chose not to participate, but I’m afraid if our next bishop doesn’t take much action I’ll be forced to add my signature to the denunciation.

That said, I too hope our next bishop will be much, much more conservative :).

Unfortunately, my entire family is not being received.

My mother converted to Catholicism when she married my father, who was Catholic. My father left the faith and after marital difficulties there was a divorce.
I was baptized an Anglican.

I became very interested in Catholicism a year ago and have been studying it. After a long time, my mother has returned to the Sacraments and I will be received this Easter.

I live with my mother’s parents, who do not attend any church but are fairly anti-catholic. I continue to pray for them.

Hi,
Father P was an Associate Pastor at my New Bern Parish. We all loved him there - especially for the way he contrasted the Pastor. I’m glad he is doing so well. I new he would! He is a convert from Baptist!
God Bless our Priests,
Dano

At the moment there is a bit of a backlog of vacant dioceses. This is due in part to the Pope’s health (and thus reduced working schedule) and also in part due to the upcoming retirement of our Nuncio.

So Bishop Gossman might be asked to stay on for a while longer - or his retirement could be accepted but no replacement named for a period of time. Of course, there is also the possibility that a replacement will be named immediately.

There really is no way to predict which way it’ll go.
