Is there a website where one can enter in a Bishop’s name and it will do like a family tree back to the apostles?
Yes, but most likely not all the way to the apostles, For Latin bishops, the 95% chance is that they will end at Scipione Cardinal Rebiba (+1577). We do not know who consecrated him.Is there a website where one can enter in a Bishop’s name and it will do like a family tree back to the apostles?
Right. Catholic-Hierarchy.org goes back to the 1500s, but the records before then are not available online. Whether those records exist in some corner of the Vatican library or whether they have been lost to history, I do not know.Yes, but most likely not all the way to the apostles, For Latin bishops, the 95% chance is that they will end at Scipione Cardinal Rebiba (+1577). Yes, but the lineage of Pope of course does not equate episcopal lineage.Right. Catholic-Hierarchy.org goes back to the 1500s, but the records before then are not available online. Of course, we have the lineage of the Pope back to the beginning.
Why is that? Was he a bishop for a long time and consecrated a large number of Bishops from all over Europe? Was he a traveling Bishop (perhaps one of the first modern day nuncios?)Today, virtually all Latin bishops trace their lineage to Cardinal Rebiba.
In the early 18th century, Pope Benedict XIII, whose holy orders were descended from Rebiba, personally consecrated at least 139 bishops for various important European sees, including German, French, English and New World bishops. These bishops in turn consecrated bishops almost exclusively for their respective countries.
Today, more than 95% of the New World’s and more than 5,200 Catholic bishops alive today, including Pope Francis,[21] trace their episcopal lineage back to Rebiba.[22] However, no one is sure who consecrated him because no supporting documentation has been found.
It’s primarily because of Pope Benedict XIII, whose lineage is descended from Cardinal Rebiba. He personally consecrated bishops of most major European dioceses and the dioceses of the New World. It was so massive that the other Latin lines died out.Why is that? Was he a bishop for a long time and consecrated a large number of Bishops from all over Europe? Was he a traveling Bishop (perhaps one of the first modern day nuncios?)
Just GOOGLEIs there a website where one can enter in a Bishop’s name and it will do like a family tree back to the apostles?
:nope:Just GOOGLE
LIST OF ALL POPES:thumbsup:
That is an impossible task as Bishops are regional; NOT world wide. Even IF it were doable it would take a small library to hold the MANY volumes it would take to record such.Is there a website where one can enter in a Bishop’s name and it will do like a family tree back to the apostles?
The OP’s question has been answered. He was asking for a site with the lineages; it has been given, needs no Biblical defense, and it has already been stated that most Latin bishops, at least, trace their lineage to Cardinal Scipione Rebiba. That is an impossible task as Bishops are regional; NOT world wide. Even IF it were doable it would take a small library to hold the MANY volumes it would take to record such.
THAT SAID; I’m guessing your REAL question has to to with Succession within the Catholic Church And that my friend is eaisly proven by the bible.
Mt 10:1-8 [K J B]
1 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.
2 These are the names of the twelve apostles**: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew**; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.
6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.
7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’
8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, rive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give."
Mt 28: 16-20 K J B
16 Then the eleven [remaining] disciples went away into Galilee,** into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.**
17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted .
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying , All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go YOU therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded YOU: and, lo , I am with YOU always , even unto the end of the world. Amen.
So we see here in the highlighted passages that it was Jesus HIMSELF who instituted in an absolute sense SUCCESSION of God granted Powers and Authority to HIS Church “MY Church” Mt 16:18]
In Mt 10: verses 5 & 6 the Apostles are COMMANDED to God ONLY to the Jews: the House of Isreal
Then in Mt 28: 19 we discover Jesus EXPANDING and overriding His previous command to go ONLY to “the Jews” & NOW COMMANDS THEM to Teach the “Entire WORLD” what He Jesus taught to THEM. Amen
And notice please two points:
[1] I used the King James Bible; NOT a Catholic version
[2] IN each case it is Jesus [GOD] speaking directly too; precisely too & exclusively too His Apostles / His “My Church” Amen!
God Bless you; and to the poster that advised me that I read it worng; I say thank you and God Bless you too:thumbsup:
I haven’t read these post:blush: HOWEVERThe OP’s question has been answered. He was asking for a site with the lineages; it has been given, needs no Biblical defense, and it has already been stated that most Latin bishops, at least, trace their lineage to Cardinal Scipione Rebiba.
I am saying you are answering a question that has not been asked. So I do not know what statement it is you are tagging as inaccurate.I haven’t read these post:blush: HOWEVER
That is at best inaccurate.
From the Catholic Douay Bible which predates the KJB by about 50 years and was translated from the Latin Vulgate; [Yes Luther changed it]
Acts Of Apostles 20:28
Take heed to yourselves, and to the whole flock, wherein the Holy Ghost hath placed you bishops, to rule the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood
Philippians 1:1
Paul and Timothy, the servants of Jesus Christ; to all the saints in Christ Jesus, who are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacon
The Latin Vulgate
Acts 20:28-30
Douay-Rhiems Catholic Bible
Acts 20:28-30
28 Take heed to yourselves and to the whole flock, wherein the Holy Ghost hath placed you bishops, to rule the Church of God which he hath purchased with his own blood.29 I know that after my departure ravening wolves will enter in among you, not sparing the flock.30 And of your own selves shall arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
God Bless you,
Patrick & thanks for the assist
It is my semi-informed opinion I’m knowledgable BUT NOT an expert on everythingI am saying you are answering a question that has not been asked. So I do not know what statement it is you are tagging as inaccurate.
The OP asked for lineages, and it has been given. There is no need for a Biblical defense for no attack has been made. So I don’t even know why you’re throwing out Bible verses or talking about wolves where none are needed.
The fact is that 95% of Latin bishops trace their lineage to Cardinal Rebiba, and from him onward, we have no more certainty as to the rest of the lineage. So our records stop there.
