I think Bishop Samra is going to be exactly what our Melkite Church needs. I prayed that he would be made our new Eparch. He is truly an amazing man. I’m hoping to be able to meet him this Sunday, provided no one in my family gets sick or is hospitalized. 😃

I pray that you do get to meet him, and that your family be safe and in good health.

We “agreed” not to ordain married men for over a century? Do these people not read up on a topic before posting a news article on it?
Looks like a bit of spin there, by the author of that article.

Perhaps he meant the bishops ‘agreed to obey’. 😦

Not going into schism over the prohibition is a form of “agreeing” to obey the prohibition. Despite the fact that the prohibition itself violated the “nec plus, nec minus, nec aliter” of the various treaties of reunion…

I’m always suprised by this remark of nothing more, nothing less, nothing other, from whatever source, as the agreements were made in a particular territory, not in all jurisdictions. For example 1595 for the Union fo Brest, the Commonwealth of Poland-Lithuania (from the Union of Lublin in 1569 continuing Lithuanian power until 1795).

Reading the Treaty Of Brest Document - Articles Concerning Union With The Roman Church:

“We require prior guarantees of these articles from the Romans before we enter into union with the Roman Church.”

“13.—And if in time the Lord shall grant that the rest of the brethren of our people and of the Greek Religion shall come to this same holy unity, it shall not be held against us or begrudged to us that we have preceded them in this unity, for we have to do this for definite, serious reasons for harmony in the Christian republic [Poland] to avoid further confusion and discord.”

[These articles were accepted by the hierarchy of the Church in Kiev in three languages: Ukrainian, Polish, and Latin. It is on this basis that the Church of Kiev is in communion with the Roman Catholic Church. The articles frequently refer to the King of Poland. The function of the King of Poland vis-à-vis the Greek-Catholic Church were assumed by the Austrian Emperor. As there is no longer a King or Emperor, and the Greek-Catholic Church is certainly not state-supported in Ukraine, these functions revert to the synod or lapse entirely.]

Bless you, Bishop Nicholas Samra. You have acted wisely and prudently in your decision to ordain married men to the holy priesthood. Did not Christ do the same when He chose His apostles?
Glory to Jesus Christ!
