Bishop Schneider backs the SSPX

Lifting the excommunication only had to do with that specific act.

The excommunications were incurred automatically as a result of consecrating more bishops than Rome approved. They were lifted, as I understand it, if the FSSPX promised to tone it down with attacks on the Pope, among other things. Pope Benedict must have judged whatever they did afterward as sufficient to lift the excommunications.
