Bishops

Outside of chess, I’m not too familiar with bishops.

If I may ask, how are bishops appointed? Is this a life long irrevocable appointment?

Bishops are appointed by Rome. Candidates entire records are sent to Rome. Ultimately it is the Pope who signs the appointment of the Bishop.

The Papal Nuncio prepared a list of candidates. He is required to consult with the bishops, priests and laity concerned. Generally, he forwards three names. The Congregation of Bishops selects one and the Pope confirms this or asks for a new look.

A few places in Europe still have chapters of canons with the right to nominate the bishop for the diocese. Here it Chapter of Canons of the diocese nominate three candidates and the pope picks one of the three.

In the history of the church, a wide variety of means for the selection of bishops has been used at various times and in various places.

Bishops are asked to retire at age 75. They can be removed for cause but not for matters of opinion.

Again, thank you. If I may ask one more question; could you define or direct me to finding out what would cause would call for a removal of a persons status as a bishop.

All that has been said is for the Roman Church and the eastern churches in the diaspora.

In the ancestral boundries of the eastern churches the bishops are appointed by the synod of bishops.

Also in the eastern church there is no retirement age, even in the diaspora.
