JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Billed as the world’s first black Jesus movie, “Son of Man” portrays Christ as a modern African revolutionary and aims to shatter the Western image of a placid savior with fair hair and blue eyes.

The South African film, which premieres on Sunday at the U.S. Sundance festival in Utah, transports the life and death of Christ from first century Palestine to a contemporary African state racked by war and poverty.

Jesus is born in a shanty-town shed, a far cry from a manger in a Bethlehem stable. His mother Mary is a virgin, though feisty enough to argue with the angels. Gun-wielding authorities fear his message of equality and he ends up hanging on a cross.

“We wanted to look at the gospels as if they were written by spindoctors and to strip that away and look at the truth,” director Mark Dornford-May told Reuters in an interview.

I can’t believe how these people blaspheme the blessed Mother and her Christ. The black Jesus movie, is anti-Semitism.

There are Black African Jews, you know.🤓

Wether Jesus is black or not doesn’t concern me. It’s the message of the movie that matters. The Virgin Mary argung with angels doesn’t even sound right biblically.

Barf… that is just going too far. Why portray Jesus as something He wasn’t just to make a* political* statement? It doesn’t matter what Jesus looked like, fine, but Mary argues with angels? The movie maker doesn’t believe Jesus is the Son of God, but portrayed him as resurrecting to symbolize the liberation of Africa? God chose Jesus to be Jewish for a reason, who are we to question that? I honestly don’t mind artwork that portrays Biblical Scenes or Jesus, the HOlyFamily, etc. in a particular culture. As long as the theology is the same, I understand the intent. This movie, however doesn’t sound theologically sound.
