Black Jesus...?

Hmm. Maybe, just maybe, any depictions of Jesus are likely to be culturally-influenced. It makes no sense at all to me why people of any race would complain that a bunch of Northern European painters during the Rennaisance period painted Jesus in their own image(s), though I can understand the objection to the idea that such depictions of Jesus are somehow “more accurate” than others, or more suitable or anything like that.

If you want non-Anglo depictions of Jesus, you must look to non-Anglo cultures.

The love of Christ is beautiful, and that’s what I see in all of these.
 
If you study (and believe it was His burial linen) the image on the Shroud of Turin, His human body was of a Palestinian Jew. But like above, it doesnt really matter. He’s there for all of us.
 
If Jesus were black, then Judas wouldn’t have had to give him the kiss of betrayal. He could have just said “get the black guy.” Sorry if this isn’t PC.

Not that it would matter though!! Blacks are not inferior to Jews or any other race for that matter.

While I don’t think his skin color matters, he probably WAS dark skinned living where he did and all.
 
I had wanted to ask this question too. I was actually thinking of the first picture that Omyo12 posted. But then I never did because I came to the conclusion that it really doesn’t matter.

So this thread interested me. I like how various cultures depicted Him and Mary in their own likeness, not necessarily in their own image. (Two distinct things.)

Since I grew up with the “European” Jesus, I guess that’s the one I relate to the most and picture the most. Although, I really like the “Mexican” image that dzheremi posted.
 
We can’t be sure what Color Jesus was , but from what we all know He was born in Jerusalem so one would Assume Jesus had Dark Olive Skin , Dark eyes & Dark Hair like Many Middle Eastern , & Some Jews also Have Dark Olive Skin , Dark Brown Eyes & Dark Hair So Jesus Could had been Middle Eastern , Or Jew Or maybe even Mix Jew & Middle Eastern Who knows There’s No Hard Evidence Or Proof what Jesus was Race wise But We all know he was born in Jerusalem Which is In the Middle East so One would only Assume He was Dark With Dark Brown Eyes & Dark Hair .

So God Could have looked like A Dark Skin Jew Or Middle Eastern Person , But I’ve Heard the same thing from people mainly from the African American Community .

My thing is I would like to look at Jesus as been A Universal Race person Which Means Hes all Colors & Races of the Rainbow Not Just Black or White but A Universal Race After all He created all Race of All walks of life So I look at Jesus our Lord Christ as Been Universal When it Comes to What Race he is to me Hes all Races Black & white & Asian & All .
 
I think it very apropos that we often paint Jesus looking more like the person painting than like what he looked like. After all we are created in His image. And according to scripture there are no races, just Christians.

Back a few years ago there was a show called purgatory that was on for a short time. On it whenever God made an appearance, whoever was talking to him would see themselves. It always made me think.

Mmm, a slightly feminine-looking man, but there are real men with delicate facial features, so I don’t see anything offensive in this image.

If he has his mother’s eyes then does he have his father’s nose? 😉

When I am in Mass and I hear the words of the Consecration, I imagine the priest as Jesus (also when he blesses the Bread and the Wine after the Offeratory).

Hence, to me, Jesus is sometimes white, black, Indian, Vietnamese, Irish, and sometimes He even was Polish.

On another note, whoever calls the Catholic Church racists is completely unaware of the make up of the parishes! I was listening to a talk one time from a Catholic convert who spent some time near Conroe, Texas, looking for a church. He looked into the various faiths around; Baptists, Methodists, Catholic, and several others. What he noticed was the Catholic Church in Montgomery, Texas was the only Church with people representing all the local makeup - white, black, Mexican, and others. That’s what caused him to investigate the Catholic Church even deeper.
