If all sins can be forgiven, what are sins against the Holy Spirit?
Matthew 12:32, Mark 3:29, Luke 12:10

The sin of unrepentence. If you refuse to repent then you cannot be forgiven.

This truth can help us to understand that both all sins can be forgiven and the sin against the Holy Spirit cannot be forgiven, because it is the prompting of the Holy Spirit that allows us to repent. Refusing to yeild to this prompting prevents forgiveness.

**More specifically, what sins offend the Holy Spirit? **

A. There are six sins that offend the Holy Spirit. These are:

(1) Despair,

“By despair, man ceases to hope for his personal salvation from God, for help in attaining it or for the forgiveness of his sins. Despair is contrary to God’s goodness, to his justice - for the Lord is faithful to his promises - and to his mercy.” (C.C.C. # 2091)

(2) Presumption of God’s mercy,

“There are two kinds of presumption. Either man presumes upon his own capacities, (hoping to be able to save himself without help from on high), or he presumes upon God’s almighty power or his mercy (hoping to obtain his forgiveness without conversion and glory without merit).” (C.C.C. # 2092)

(3) Impugning the known truth,
(Clarification: To “impugn” the known truth means to attack it by word or argument, to resist it, to contradict it, or even to oppose the known truth or to challenge it as false.)

(4) Envy the spiritual good of another,
(Clarification: Regarding the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians states, “All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually as the Spirit chooses.” To envy the spiritual good of another is to question the Divine judgment of the Holy Spirit in His distribution of spiritual gifts. It is to be jealous of another person who has a gift different than one’s own gift. Through envy, one rejects the gift that he has received from the Holy Spirit, determining in his own mind that the gift he has received is not good enough for him and he wants someone else’s gift.)

(5) Obstinacy in sin,
(Clarification: To be “obstinate” means to resist the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, to be stubborn, to persist in sin, to be unyielding.)

(6) Final impenitence.
(Clarification: “Impenitence” means to be uncontrite, unrepentant, hardened, unconverted, to be without regret, shame or remorse.)

Wow Tony, Great answer.
I think in a nut shell we agree. It means to refuse the promptings and grace of the Holy Spirit.

I would probably add that this must be obstinant to the end. Anyone could at anytime by free will repent of these sins. It is obstinant persistance unto death that leaves these sins unforgivable.

It is possible that could resist the Holy Spirit today and later repent. This is however a very ill advised and dangerous action to take.

Its just called google. I myself would have had to think for a while to have come up with them all.:o

**Hi toni, 🙂 **
I agree with matthias, you gave great answers.
**I was looking at the same type of question in Moral theology, and mentioned a site containing Irenaeus’ ‘Against Heresies’. Book 1, chapter 10, which is a section on those who blasphem the Holy Spirit. Number three on your list seems to sum up the type of blasphemy pertaining to Irenaeus’ comments in this chapter, by only believing in certain Gospels, not all, or saying there were truths which ‘they’ knew, but were ‘secret’ to all but a few. (i.e. therefore adding to the Gospels) **
**
(3) Impugning the known truth,
(Clarification: To "impugn
**" the known truth means to attack it by word or argument, to resist it, to contradict it, or even to oppose the known truth or to challenge it as false.)
Thanks for clarification on this matter. It seems a very popular topic lately, and a very relevent one!

Much love and peace to you and your loved ones.

One can only repent if given the grace to repent by God. One cannot do it completely on ones own. Thus it is important to pray that God will continue to give the grace and inspire the sinner to accept it.

I don’t know if there is any teaching on how often one may say no and God will continue to push. There seems a danger that he will let us have it our way.

Pope John Paul II explained the sin vs. The Holy Spirit in his encyclical on the Holy Spirit, Dominum et vivificantem

i’ll throw in an apocalyptic type of unforgivable sin:

seeing as St. Augustine’s tradition is that St. Paul’s restrainer of the “man of sin” is the Holy Spirit (2 Thess. 2), we can speak of the “unforgivable sin” of the human race when it, after the Holy Spirit has completed the work of the Redemption in this side of the end of time, rebels against the faith (sparing, of course, only a remnant) and considers the whole process of Salvation history prior to be a complete waste, a lie, similar to how the angels had received the full revelation of God’s Plan prior to their test and the bad angels rebelled and rejected God in a total irrevocable manner.

If your conscience troubles you then you are not mortally guilty of that soul. Only the Holy Spirit calls you to repentence.

In the Scriptures Jesus makes that statement after the scribes and Pharisees say regarding Jesus “He is possessed by an unclean spirit”

basically they are looking at good and calling it evil.

They will never be able to rest with that thought in mind. They may be forgiven for their part in putting Jesus to death but they cannot rest in God with the idea that somehow Jesus wasn’t the promised one of their faith.
