Blasphemy

What exactly is defined as blasphemy and taking the Lord’s name in vain? I know it is a moral sin, and I definitely want to avoid doing anything like that. Also, is saying “Oh my god” a sin? (My parents never let me say it, and I’ve always been taught it was taking the Lord’s name in vain, so I don’t say it, but most of my friends do [who also have been raised Christians] and whenever I notice they say it I just want to like correct them, but before I do that I want to make sure if it is a sin or not.) Please join my group the golden arrow this is all about praying against blasphemy and it is very powerful.
i can also write out the chaplet for you if you want, these prayers make reperation to God for all blasphemy to Him…
everytime you hear the Name of God taken in vain just say these words and they were dictated by Our Lord to Sr Mary of Saint Peter. ““BLESSED BE THE HOLY NAME OF GOD, begone satan”” i say this to myself no matter where i hear it should it be in the street or on tv or anywhere else i happen to hear it…
 
Yes it is a sin to say you-know-what. You should only use the Lord’s name to praise him or when explaining something. Never should you use it in surprise and most certainly not to curse him or someone else.

Modern Catholic Dictionary:

BLASPHEMY. Speaking against God in a contemptuous, scornful, or abusive manner. Included under blasphemy are offenses committed by thought, word, or action. Serious contemptuous ridicule of the saints, sacred objects, or of persons consecrated to God is also blasphemous because God is indirectly attacked. Blasphemy is a grave violation of charity toward God. Its gravity may be judged by the capital punishment in the Old Testament, severe penalties of the Church, and in many cases also of the State for blasphemous speech or conduct. In order for a person to sin gravely in this manner, he must use blasphemous expressions and realize the contemptuous meaning of what he says or does. (Etym. Latin blasphemia, blasphemy; from Greek blasphēmein, to speak ill of.)

Okay, this is what I thought! If someone does take the Lord’s name in vain, but they aren’t doing it and trying to be offensive to God, this is still a sin isn’t it? Whether they know it or not?

So it is only a mortal sin if the person knows they’re being offensive to God?
 
Personally I do not think saying GD or My God is blasphemy. In the former case I invoke the Lords help while the other one I ask Him to curse something. Vengeance is the Lord’s no?

If I am wrong in this view then I am sorry, I will answer to the Almighty when I see his face.

For example, if someone gets startled and blurts out without thinking Oh My God or Jesus Christ that would not be a sin of grave matter.
