I’m sure you all know the prayer: Bless us oh Lord for these thy gifts, which we are about to receive, from thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen. I pray it before every meal but I’m beginning to question my judgement.
The prayer asks the Lord to bless us so we may receive His gifts, but if we have the gifts in our possession, are we not already blessed and have received it? Wouldn’t it make more sense to say: Thank you Oh Lord for these thy gifts…?
Comments would be most appreciated.

Bless us oh Lord AND THESE Thy gifts…

I’ve never prayed it with “for”. It’s always been AND in our family and at the parish I work in. Solves it.

Yes, bless us AND these gifts (our food) that we are about to receive (eat).

I’m reminded of a principal we used to have at the Catholic school I worked at…he used to pray “and forgive us our sinners”
I have no idea we owned sinners. ;):p:D

And a student who prayed the Fatima prayer…
“especially those who mostly need Thy mercy”.
Cute kid. Cracked me up.

Sorry OP. Not making fun of you, just remembering some funny variants. God bless you!
