Blessed be GOD Prayer Book

Dear Forum!

I picked up a copy of: Blessed Be GOD, the prayer book, black leather from the FSSP gift shop in Sarasota, Florida as we are vacationing in the Sarasota area. I used to have: Handbook of Prayers, an excellent prayer book, but I gave it to my brother so he could have one. I’m keeping this one. Excellent. This Prayerbook is like no other prayer book. Black Leather, Ribbon Marker, gold edges, and not only that, TRADITIONAL CATHOLIC PRAYERS, PRAYERS FOR JUST ABOUT ANYTHING! This prayerbook has to be like some heavy dynamite/buzzuka on satans ugly head. satan must not feel very good after I say my evening devotions. Get this everyone, I went from praying 15 mintues a night, to almost 3 hours at night, plus my other prayers after MASS. This prayerbook has truly done what it was printed to do. Increase my Intimate Life with the LORD JESUS. It also has very, very beautiful medieval style art. It also has reflections and meditations from the IMITATION OF CHRIST AND SACRED SCRIPTURE. Its like having a Retreat in your pocket!! I WILL buy another copy sometime. However, if any of you other TRADS like me out there own a copy, I have one question:

If I use this Prayerbook every night

How long should it last?

How long should this prayerbook last before it falls apart on me? Under regular Prayer wear and tear?

providing I dont use it for tractor pulling ,

How long have you had yours???

(P.S, I think I have the perfect Prayer book, so Im not looking for another devotional or prayer book)

How long it lasts depends on whether it’s imitation leather or the real thing and how heavily you handle it. I found a genuine leather copy about 10 years ago at an estate sale for a quarter. It was given to someone for Christmas in 1949. I know it was used a lot before I bought it because the gilded edging is much worn away and the ribbons are threadbare, at least the part that hangs out of the book. There are a couple very small worn spots on the corners. Other than that, it is in excellent shape. I also have found it to be an excellent prayerbook, though I alternate between it and another excellent one that I found at a second hand store for free, Manual of Prayers for the Use of the Laity, that was given to someone as a present in 1939.

My husband has a copy I bought from E-bay a few year ago that is not genuine leather and was given as a gift to a son in 1927. The inside is in great shape, all the pages intact, still connected firmly to the spine. The outside is a different case. The cover is falling apart and splitting. my husband uses it nearly every day.

Yours will probably outlive you if you treat it properly, no matter how often you use it.

I have this on my Amazon wishlist. I’m debating between getting a prayer book vs a 1962 Missal but I’m leaning more towards the prayer book.

If your old copy of “Blessed Be God” falls apart, you can replace it. It was reprinted in 2010 by Preserving Christian Publications of Boonville, New York (www.pcpbooks.com), and I recently purchased a copy. It is a wonderful prayerbook. It is small enough to to fit in my purse. Besides all the wonderful prayers that mymamamary mentioned, it also has the Ordinary of the Tridentine Mass, plus the epistle and gospel readings for Sunday Mass throughout the year. It is handy for Sunday Mass if I don’t want to take my big, heavy daily missal.

My nanny gave my sister her Blessed be God, the 1954 edition I think, it’s leather. My grandma used it daily all through college and most of her adult life. My sister uses it all the time and has for years. Take care of it and it will last for a looong time.
