Blessed Easter Eggs

After Easter Sunday mass today the priest made an announcement that there were blessed Easter Eggs available for anyone who would like to take a few home. I was wondering if this was more of a cultural tradition? I ask this due to the fact that my parish is a predominantly Polish parish and all of the priests are Polish.

I have never encountered blessed Easter Eggs before and so took one with me. I always like to learn about the different cultural traditons of Catholics from around the world so if anyone can enlighten me on this I’d appreciate it.

They did this at my parish too. We also have a Polish priest, and a Canadian one.
 
It’s a general practice among Byzantine Churches–Catholic and Orthodox.

bpbasilphx If it is indeed a general practice then in all my years of being a Catholic and having attending both Catholic Grammar and High Schools I never saw any blessed Easter Eggs handed out. Plus, in my neighborhood you have many strong Italian and Czech Catholic parishes that I have visited in previous Easters and never have they handed out blessed Easter eggs. Even my mother who went with me to mass had never seen this practice of giving out Blessed Easter Eggs in all of her childhood.

In looking for more info on the net on blessed Easter Eggs it seems to be more of a practice among Polish Catholics. In an article I read about Polish Catholics they will have Easter Sunday breakfast where they boil the Easter eggs, have them blessed and then eat them.

Thank you so much for the link **Pani Rose **🙂 I love to learn about the traditions of Catholic’s from other countries and Rites. Next Divine Mercy Sunday there will be a breakfast held in the parish hall I wonder if they will break the blessed Easter eggs there?? hmmm…

It is polish traditition. And it shoudn’t be just eggs blessing but also a slice of bread, a bit of meat, salt and peper, cake. All put in a basket (small Easter basket) and decorated with painted eggs, flowers etc.🙂
And all the food is shared between a family during Easter brakfest. They also share blessed eggs between them as they share holy wafer during Christmas Eve.
 
Anna if you scroll down on the link I posted you can see a few baskets waiting to be blessed. I love getting our basket ready. I have taught many young people in our parish to make Paska breads with beautiful braids. They get so excited when they see the braiding they have done with their own hands. Oh I love hren and the egg cheese, espeically nut roll. I have a wonderful recipe for them that does not require an initial raise which saves a lot of time and also makes for a wonderfuly light dough. I think it is my favorite part of the year in the life our faith and church. Oh, my husband was raised PNC - I love his family traditions, and foods.

And butter molded into the shape of a lamb! 😉
 
I didn’t know about a lamb made of butter; I knew about sugar shaped lambs. Children love to eat them on Easter 🙂
I don’t really know where this tradition came from. It is very common in Poland (so called Catholic country;) ). Even people who don’t go to church, get their baskets of eggs and food ready for blessing. It is sad but for lots of them it’s the only way of celebrating Easter and the only time they go to church during Easter time.
 
I’d like to apologize for not having responded to all of your wonderful posts sooner but I have been going through a very rough personal tragedy.

It is wonderful to hear of the richness of the tradition of Blessed Easter eggs and the Easter breakfast.

I too have never heard of a lamb made of butter. 😉 That’s Catholic culture at its smoothest.
