My confessor said I can bury (no need to burn) my old palms but I forgot to ask if they should be crushed or just put in the ground as is. And can I put this year’s palms with them or do I have to wait until next Palm Sunday?

Being scrupulous (as you can see), would it be sinful for me not to take any at Palm Sunday Mass?

Thanks everyone.

No, it would not. My own preference would be to not take any at all, but my wife insists on grabbing a handful. Then they wind up just lying around the house and falling on the floor, where the cats think that they’re toys. Not exactly the desired end for blessed sacramentals.

Sounds like we have the same kinds of households - lots of cats!

I started taking just 1 after finding a stray palm behind some furniture. We have the option of burning, but for Mary, who doesn’t, burying whole, folded, or crushed works. It all turns to dirt eventually, no matter what shape it’s in. It could even be buried in a flower pot.

The church I used to belong to collected them and, at a certain time of the year, would burn them. Then they would use the ashes for Ash Wednesday. Call around and see if there are any Catholic churches that do this.

I think this is what my Parish does. I only took two palm pieces and made the folded cross out of them, which I have on display in the house. Next year I’ll give them back to the Church for burning.
