Hello,

we’ll be getting a new home soon, and I’ve been thinking about asking a priest to bless it. I was wondering if this is usually done or not?

And are there other “Catholic” things people do for new homes? E.g. I’m hoping to have a little shrine.

thank you for your help! 🙂

Yes! Every Catholic should have their home blessed! I have a couple of shrines in my home as well to always remind me of God’s presence. Holy Water fonts at each entrance isn’t a bad idea either 🙂

It was more commonly done when I was young. You will have to make an appointment but I’m sure the priest would be delighted. Invite some people around for the occasion.

Some families have a little altar blessed in their house too. For the old fashioned Catholic family home you would have big framed depictions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and of Mary in a prominent place.

I have a statue of the Blessed Virgin of Lourdes in the rockery overlooking the pond.
