We love each other dearly and are planning to wed in a couple of months. We just found out from blood tests that we run the risk of having a child(ren) with sickle cell disease. If I reject this lady whom I love so much on grounds of probability, what assurance do I have that another one with a compatible blood would not bear a child with cleft palate or any other congenital problem? To what extent must I, a child of God, consider the avoidance of a problem spouse or child over true love in choosing my spouse?

I don’t think that the two of you having a risk of having kids with sickle cell disease should prevent you from being married. Both sets of your parents had that chance yet neither of you have sickle cell disease. A chance is not a guarantee. Every couple has a chance everytime they get married to have children with diseases or problems. That is no reason to not get married or have children. From what I have heard from parents with children with diseases or problems, those are the most blessed children and they thank God for them. (Not that we all don’t want healthy children)

If that is the only thing in your mind keeping you from marrying the woman of your dreams then forget about it. I see no reason for that to keep you apart.

I’ll keep you in my prayers.

You need genetic counseling (if you haven’t already sought it) to help you get a true picture of what the possibilities are.
