Bodies in St. Peter's Basilica

Some friends of mine were recently in Rome and at St. Peter’s Basilica saw the body of Pope Paul the 23rd and thought it appeared incorrupt. Were they viewing a statue or his actual body in and incorrupt state?

There was no Paul XXIII. The last Pope to choose the name Paul was Paul VI.

Not miraculously incorrupt. Blessed John XXIII’s body was embalmed and preserved a la Lenin. But it’s real alright.

In the Eastern Orthodox Church, we have the bodies of many saints which are incorrupt, or sweat myrrh oil.
I was in San Francisco a few years and went to the Russian Orthodox Cathedral where they have the incorrupt body of St. John Maxamovitch. It was really amazing.
