JWs say Jesus didn’t resurrect in the body but in the spirit because the Bible says “he was put to death in the flesh but raised in the spirit” …what is the proper understanding of this passage? Thanks! E

I Cor 15
42So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; 43it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.
If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”[e]; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. 46The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. 47The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. 48As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we[f] bear the likeness of the man from heaven.

I Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

I did some googling and this is what I found:

The first of these texts is found in 1 Peter 3:18 which reads as follows in the New World Translation: “Why, even Christ died once for all time concerning sins, a righteous [person] for the unrighteous ones, that he may lead you to God, he being put to death in the flesh, but being made alive in the spirit.” Jehovah’s Witnesses, therefore view the latter part of this text, “…but being made alive in the spirit.” as evidence that Jesus was raised as a spirit creature. But is this a correct understanding of this phrase? It is significant that this phrase states “in the spirit” rather than "as a spirit. The spirit referred to here is most probably the Holy Spirit, as He is certainly seen as being present at Christ’s resurrection according to Romans 1:4 (NWT): “but who with power was declared God’s Son according to the spirit of holiness by means of the resurrection from the dead - yes, Jesus Christ our Lord.”

It is also worth noting that Romans 8:8-9 describes Christians who have their physical bodies now, as being “in spirit” (literal Greek of The Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures, 1969). So if Christians can be described as having bodies now as “in spirit”, it is no problem for the risen Christ to retain His powerful resurrected physical body and be described of as ‘in the spirit’.

The other main Scripture passage that the Watchtower uses in an attempt to support their doctrine of Christ rising as a spirit creature is 1 Corninthians 15:44-46 which reads as follows in the New World Translation: “It is sown a physical body, it is raised up a spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual one. It is even so written: " The first man Adam became a living soul.” The last Adam became a life giving spirit. Nevertheless, the first is, not that which is spiritual, but that which is physical, afterward that which is spiritual." The whole point of 1 Corninthians 15:35-58 is that the natural body will be changed and raised up a powerful supernatural body. It is not as though what will be raised will be distinct from the physical body, rather, there will be a continuity. For example, verses 42-44 state how it (the body, not something else) will be raised up. It is sown a perishable, dishonorable, weak, and natural body. It (the same body) is raised up an imperishable, glorious, powerful, spiritual body. Verses 53-54 also states that the perishable mortal body will “put on” imperishability and immortality. By putting something on you are adding to what you already have.

I believe in God the Father Almighty creator of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only son our Lord; who was concieved by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified died and was buried. He descended into hell ; the third day he rose again from the dead.He asecended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty;from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.**I believe ** in the Holy Spirit ,the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the ressurection of the body, and life everlasting.Amen.

This is what the Catechism of the Catholic church has to say about the subject.

CCC “645 **By means of touch and the sharing of a meal, the risen Jesus establishes direct contact with his disciples. He invites them in this way to recognize that he is not a ghost and above all to verify that the risen body in which he appears to them is the same body that had been tortured and crucified, for it still bears the traces of his Passion. ** Yet at the same time this authentic, real body possesses the new properties of a glorious body: not limited by space and time but able to be present how and when he wills; for Christ’s humanity can no longer be confined to earth, and belongs henceforth only to the Father’s divine realm. For this reason too the risen Jesus enjoys the sovereign freedom of appearing as he wishes: in the guise of a gardener or in other forms familiar to his disciples, precisely to awaken their faith.”

There is this and much more on the resurrection the CCC from paragraphs 631-658.Hope this help's. :)
God bless you and Mary keep you! 🙂 😃
