Is it okay to just take the body, and not the blood during church?
You have posted on the non-Catholic forum, so let’s make a few clarifications:Is it okay to just take the body, and not the blood during church?
So even though Christ says to receive both you still say receiving one is Ok??You have posted on the non-Catholic forum, so let’s make a few clarifications:
If you are not a Catholic, you should refrain from receiving the Eucharist in the Catholic Church.
If you are a Catholic, you should refrain from participation in any communion service of a non-Catholic ecclesial community.
If you are a *Catholic *and are talking about receiving the Eucharist *in the Catholic Church *then yes you can receive under one or both species. It is your decision.
And, just one other point: Catholic *receive *the Body and Blood of Christ, we do not *take *it.
Each species contains the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ. In receiving either, we receive both.So even though Christ says to receive both you still say receiving one is Ok??
Please show me in scripture where that is stated. Each species contains the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ. In receiving either, we receive both.
No where to be found in scripture. If you take one or the other you are receiving the body AND blood of Jesus. If there is a host and that host is broken into two pieces, each piece contains the complete body and blood of Jesus, even if that host is broken many times into more pieces, each piece is complete. Now somewhere in the NT is a passage that makes it clear that the body and blood of Jesus is complete in both species. Maybe someone else is familiar with that scripture and can point it out.
P.S. I found it: “Whosoever”, says the Apostle, “shall eat this bread or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body **and **of the blood of the Lord” i.e. whoever receives either unworthily is guilty of both. 1 Cor 11:27
Ralph,NDfan,
So if I get a bigger piece, do I get more Jesus?
If they run out of Blood, do I get nothing?
Can Jesus be divided? If he is not present Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, where are his Soul and Divinity? Is one in the Body and the other in the Blood? Is it like a Chemical reaction where both must be present to have Jesus?
I know it may sound like I am making fun, but I am not. This are the same questions that the Church has handled for years
If one species contains the fullness of Christ; body, blood, soul and divinity, then why would receiving both be preferable (which I understand in this context to mean normatively superior)?Would you say that, since Christ offered both to the 12, that one could say receiving both would be preferable, everything else being equal (no health issues, etc)?
I would say normatively superior because that was how Christ instituted.=Thomas63116;4898900]If one species contains the fullness of Christ; body, blood, soul and divinity, then why would receiving both be preferable (which I understand in this context to mean normatively superior)?
Absolutely not! I excluded this instance only to compare receiving under one to under both. But certainly the sacrament and its benefits are received by those receiving under one, especially, but not exclusively, because of health issues.Does someone who has health issues that prevents them from receiving both, somehow receive less?
As this has been the practice of Rome for centuries, I would believe that her faithful members do receive the full benefits of the sacrament. One person might prefer to receive under both species, while another might prefer to receive under only one species. Both of them receive Christ fully.
Preferable yes, required no.Ralph,
Like lots of subjects, this one comes around fairly regularly. Would you say that, since Christ offered both to the 12, that one could say receiving both would be preferable, everything else being equal (no health issues, etc)?
Jon
A reasonable response, and POV. ThanksPreferable yes, required no.
First, the 12 were the first Bishops. The Church uses that as one reason that only the priest is required to consume both.
Second, as pointed out, there are times that both cannot be taken. Health needs are one. Another can be logistics. It is crazy to say that those who are alergic to wheat or sit in the back of the Church are denied Jesus.
I know that you question was a yes or no. I just had to put more into it.
Is it okay to just take the body, and not the blood during church?
For quite some time, yes.
There’s something I’ve missed, it seems…When did the laity in the RC church get the go-ahead to recieve both the bread and wine?
They used to have it years ago, then it was changed. It was changed back in the universal Church in the early part of the last century, I think, with it being encouraged by VII.
