Bono gives an explicit confession of being saved by Grace, not Karma

World Magazine, August 01, 2005

Gene Edward Veith

Is Bono, the lead singer and songwriter for the rock group U2, a Christian? He says he is and writes about Christianity in his lyrics. Yet many people question whether Bono is “really” a Christian, due to his notoriously bad language, liberal politics, and rock star antics (though he has been faithfully married for 23 years). But in a new book of interviews, Bono in Conversation by Michka Assayas, Bono, though using some salty language, makes an explicit confession of faith.

The interviewer, Mr. Assayas, begins by asking Bono, Doesn’t he think “appalling things” happen when people become religious? Bono counters, “It’s a mind-blowing concept that the God who created the Universe might be looking for company, a real relationship with people, but the thing that keeps me on my knees is the difference between Grace and Karma.”

For rest of story…

I’ve read the whole thing. And “salty language” notwithstanding, it’s a wonderful expression of faith and truth!

Bono is really one of the good guys… I don’t agree with him on everything, but he is trying to save the world.

Bono is a regular CS Lewis in the interview, he obviously been reading Mere Christianity. Good job Bono.
As far as juding his christiantiy… Isn’t that God’s job?

But secularist and other christians are befuddled why a rock star could be a christian when he could have what the world has to offer. I don’t know what is worse for the secualrist to doubt his motives or the christians. Propbably the Christians when I think about it.

I know the Pope got a kick out of meeting him and visa versa, he like Bono’s rosary and he asked to try on Bono’s sun glasses.
There is some weird conspiracy there you will never see printed pieces on that but on the internet you can find the pictures. I guess the vatican didn’t want the pope to be too cool or something.

Anyways I won’t judge his Christiantiy I will that up to God I have problem enough being a supposed Christian before poiting fingers at Bono or anyone else.

You don’t know about Mr. MacPhisto, do you?

Adonis33: No. He & his wife recently opened up a clothing line, though.

Hasn’t Bono recently been divorced form his wife?
Something that afflicts a number of folk who are, nonetheless, real Christians.

Bono’s mother was a Protestant. Bono’s father was Catholic…and he was very close to his father…there are several songs dedicated to his father on U2’s latest album. I believe he’s a Christian…but he doesn’t align himself to any particular denomination.

During the 2002 Super Bowl half-time show…during the opening to “Where the Streets Have No Name”…Bono prayed loudly Psalm 51:15 “O Lord, open my lips, so my mouth shows forth thy praise.” During the NBA Championships in '01 he said on air… Psalm 116 “What can I give back to God for the blessings he poured out on me. I lift high the cup of salvation as a toast to our Father. To follow through on the promise I made to you.”

Bono doesn’t adhere to any particular political ideology…for instance Democrats got mad because he was mingling with Jesse Helms and Paul O’Neill. He’s genuine in his drive for social justice…and in order to to help Africa, etc…he has to mingle with all political groups.

U2 has always mixed spirtuality with their songs…for instance…

u2.lyrics-songs.com/lyrics/107908/ ---- Yahweh
u2.lyrics-songs.com/lyrics/79543/ ---- 40
u2.lyrics-songs.com/lyrics/62946/ ---- Gloria

The last I’ve heard…Bono is still married to Ali (aka Ali Hewson).
