Book: Abandonment to Divine Providence

I am being suggested to read this book “Abandonment to Divine Providence” by Jean-Pierre de Caussade.

An excellent spiritual work, Water, by Jean Pierre de Caussade. By the time I had finished it (which took me quite a while with putting it down to ponder someting or other) I felt I had a real grasp I felt in discerning what God’s Will in all circumstances. It is not at all a difficult or complex work to understand. I found it quite simple to understand with so much in it that I often had to put it down and ponder something or other and prayerfully. Prior to reading it I was really struggling re God’s Will…by the time I had finished it, I truly wondered why I had been struggling. Hence I found it invaluable in my own journey.

One of those books one can put on the bedside table and keep handy to just pick up, open and read.

His letters and counsels are also very helpful and speak to the whole whole text and concept of abandoning oneself to God’s Will in all circumstances - the copy of Abandonment that I bought did not have the letters and counsels for some reason, but they are online.

Thank you, Barb. Although I mentioned in my post that I was being suggested, but in fact I thought of it as being requested. I am currently reading “the Imitation of Christ” and the wording is very simple for me to read.

I hope to get the book soon.

PS: your signature is an image having the word “Simplicity” on the White background. Where is the word “Purity”? Perhaps, it blends into this White background color?

I love Jean Pierre de la Caussade as he was the spiritual director of St Margaret Mary Alacoque. Being french et al, i have tread his book many times, but it has only benn the last 10 years that the light went one. :newidea:

I believe everything is ordained by God…all for our good. Nothing happens that is not of His will or not allowed. I try to put this in my times of anxiety (no job for now) etc. , misunderstandings and even persecutions for bieng Catholic…

Thank You Lord for Your wisdm that is so prevalent in the bible but also in the writings of your great saints! We are so blessed to have such richness in our faith!

Thank you, Barb. I had prayed and discussed with a Spiritual Director on some topic and that is what he wanted me to have. I too hope it will be very helpful to me.

I have not read all of Abandonment, but have read chapters here and there. What I have read I have found immensely helpful.

I personally found what I have read to be much more useful than Imitation of Christ. Though IoC has some beautiful chapters, by and large I found it harsh in many places.

Hi John…good to catch up with again!
I was assigned the Imitation of Christ as a teenager in a convent, it scared the living daylights out of me . That imprinted sufficiently to not desire to go back to it again though I remember almost very very little of it except that it is mainly Jesus speaking with some other person about the spiritual life.
Yet it can indeed be “different strokes for different folks” and what may appeal to one, may not have appeal for another. I have heard a few people speak very highly of it but have no desire to return to it.

Amazing isn’t it when that light goes on- I call it blind going up in a dark room - one cannot understand why on earth one could never insight it before.

I was reading in Zenit last night that we could be having a 6year old saint and her story, or the little Zenit shared of her story, is quite amazing for one so very young. I saw too somewhere that there is a thread connected to this little sweetie and probably great saint!
