Hi All!
I recently entered the Church this past Easter Vigil coming from an Episcopalian background. I have been praying the Daily Office from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer (BCP) for years. I have tried switching to the LOTH, Magnifcat, Give Us This Day, and none of them are resonating with me in the way that the BCP does. I just think the BCP is more direct, better organized, and just more inspiring in general. 🙂

Do you think it’s ok for a Catholic to use the BCP for his daily devotions?

Thanks!!

Dave

I would think that since the Catholic Church has approved a large section of the Book of Common Prayer, I would say it’s safe if it’s just the Office you’re sticking to. I would advise, however, to adjust to the Calendar as set by the Catholic Church, even the one for the Ordinariates.

As an alternative, you can also consider the Customary of Our Lady of Walsingham, produced as an interim publication by the UK Ordinariate. It’s a stopgap publication but it may be worth considering as it’s a completely Catholic publication.

Eventually, I expect the Ordinariates to publish a final edition of the Divine Office, after which I would recommend that you stop using the BCP and switch to that.

Prayer is prayer. As long as nothing is against God’s Will.

I hope so - given that much of it has been at the centre of my own daily prayer since I became a Roman Catholic! (I am also originally from an Anglican background).

I tend to combine the Catholic calendar with the BCP offices; or at any rate, with the Collects in particular. Plus the translation of the Psalms, Canticles etc, are just infinitely more familiar to me in a cultural sense; I still by default say “Thy will be done in Earth as it is…” etc in the Lord’s Prayer, which sometimes garners amused looks at Mass…

I can’t speak for how they may have changed since 1789 in the Episcopal Church’s use, but whatever one may think of Cranmer as a reformer in general, he was a first-rate prayer-writer and liturgist. Other people have some good advice, but I am sure it is absolutely ok, if you make adjustments as might be needed to the calendar etc.

Hi Maestro

I love attending Anglican Evensong (from the BCP).

One of the good things about the BCP is that all the psalms are said in morning/evening prayer.

God bless +

Michael
