Anyone know much about the Book of Daniel and the various prophecies therein and their relation to actual events? A co-worker of mine (who is Christian but I do not know what denomination) always brings up the Book of Daniel and the various ages and says we are in the Sand Age or something since the development of the Silicon Chip and Independence of Israel in 1948 and that this would soon lead to the end of times. He also says he hates to sound like a Jehovah’s Witness or Adventist always proclaiming the end but he’s interested in this book so I’m trying to learn a bit more about it from perhaps a Catholic perspective. He agrees with me that no one will know the day or hour of the coming of the Lord.

The prophecies in the book of Daniel have already been fulfilled on two levels: in the destruction of the Babylonian empire and its supplantation by Greece and then Rome, and by the first coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The attempt by modern dispensationalists and pre-millinialists to make it fit into current events neccesitates doing violence to the text and put them in a long line of speculators that burn the midnight oil matching this scripture verse with that news item. Your friends interpretations are particularly “out there.”

If you want to get a comprehensive Catholic picture of what the book of Daniel really teaches and how it is distorted by the “left behind” crowd, I would HIGHLY recommend David Currie’s “Rapture: The End Time Fiction That Leaves The Bible Behind” published by Sophia Press. The entire first third of this meaty book is dedicated to OT prophecy, especially the book of Daniel. Here is a link:
