I have been reading a bit of Scripture lately to use for prayer and devotion. I decided to start with the Deuterocanonicals. Tobit was awesome as was Judith. Wondering why neither is a movie. Both would be great.

With Esther I just strated today and right away with the RSV-CE it has the deuterocanonical word in italics supposedly restored to the chronological order. When did Moredcai warn the King that his eunuchs posed him danger? In the second year of the reign like the italics said or in the 7th year of the reign like the non-disputed text says? This is a bit troublesome that the story would be so uneven.

The additions, including the conspiracy in Ahasuerus’ 2nd year, post-date the more widely accepted text. While they appear in all three surviving Septuagint codices, they do not appear in the Hebrew (Masoretic) text, which is why Jerome appended them to his Latin version of the book.

I know that they are in the Septuagint and why Jerome rejected them for not being in the Hebrew but since we accept them as inspired why is the story “wrong” either the event took place in the 2nd year or the 7th. Likewise either the pur would take place on the 13th of the month OR the 14th as in the deuterocanonical version. This seems to be a blatant inconsistency, so what is our defense?

(I should first of all point out that I am not a Catholic, which may be why I fail to understand the necessity behind your question.)

I do not understand why any defence is needed. The text says what it says. Why should we have any need to try to explain it away, or justify it?

I guess you know that Esther is a movie.
