I am looking for a book to give my 30-year old nephew who was baptized Catholic but has been poorly catechized (or not at all). Friends have invited him to non-denominational churches which he says makes him “feel happy.” I do not live in the same town so cannot see him frequently, and he is super busy starting his career so he would not go to any classes. What book would grab the attention of an intelligent young man?

I have given the “Screwtape Letters” under similar circumstances. Another possibility would be “Mere Christianity.” These are great Catholic books by a non-Catholic.

Those are wonderful suggestions. What about books specific to Catholicism?
I want him to understand why it is worth his effort to learn his faith.

Especially since he is getting some non-denom influence, I really liked Born Fundamentalist Born Again Catholic by David Currie. I found it engaging and easy to read as a teen.Born Fundamentalist Born Again Catholic. It covers all of the main fundmentalist/non-denom/bible alone objections against Catholicism while teaching what the Church is actually about.

I highly recommend this book Rediscovering Catholicism by Matthew Kelly. His target audience is people who don’t understand Catholicism and think it’s irrelevant. It’s simple yet doesn’t water anything down. I think he would get a lot out of it.

Catholicism for Dummies

Despite the title it is a good overview of Catholic teaching written by a very good priest Fr. John Trigillio (who is on EWTN frequently). It is especially good for someone who knows a little about the faith but needs to fill in the gaps.

The Catechism is good…as a reference book, but something would be good to reach him.

I gotcha, how about Making all things New by Henri Nouwen
