We have an elderly male friend who has been an atheist for most of his adult life. He called last night and was asking questions about the Catholic Church and seems to have had his interest piqued due to Pope Benedict’s resignation. (He is not the only non-Catholic we know that has become very interested in Catholicism because of the recent news about the Pope. 👍)

I would like some suggestions on books that would be interesting to an elderly atheist. He seems to likes history.

Thanks for the help! 🙂

p.s. please pray for his conversion

I would give him “Mere Christianity” (C.S. Lewis) to begin with. The approach assumes nothing about the truth of Scripture or the Church, but really follows from reason and logic to prove God’s existence and the necessity of Christianity. It is a great introduction for one who has no beliefs.

Prayers:

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

Amen

While I have not read it, if he’s interested in history, “The Fathers Know Best” by Jimmy Akin might not be a bad book to begin with. “To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant,” as Bl. John Cardinal Newman said.

Thanks for the replies - I picked up Mere Christianity the other night and have started reading it.

So far, it is great.
