Hi, everyone

I am eager to learn and read about the foundations on morality and how to apply them. I always have the opportunity to correct my friends and my colleagues on their sinful behaviour about various topics in which the topic on morality arises. I would like to demonstrate and persuade them, explaining the mechanics and how natural law works. And if possible to make the connection to the Divine Law (whether it escalates somehow). I am trying to find a book that has the style of Thomas Aquinas and/or based on his teaching.

Do you have any recommendations? Could you indicate whether it is about on moral philosophy or on moral theology, please?

Godspeed!

What We Can’t Not Know by J. Budzieszewski. Great book on the natural law, and easy to understand.

Back to Virtue by Peter Kreeft. Entry-level text on the cardinal virtues.

Learning the Virtues that Lead You to God by Romano Guardini. Good for spiritual meditation on the virtues and how to grow in them in our day-to-day lives.

"The Rules of Christian Decorum and Civility " by John Baptist de la Salle

Germain Grisez’s The Way of the Lord Jesus is also a great look at moral theology. It’s not necessarily a beginner text, though. I believe the full text of it is available for free online.

I would be careful with Grisez. Not only is that not really a beginner text, he’s got some questionable ideas.

he’s got some questionable ideas.
I wasn’t aware of that. I confess, I haven’t gone through the whole text myself, but I’d always had the impression it was reliable. Do you mind my asking what parts are questionable?

Correcting friends and colleges WRT morals is not your job unless you are their priest.

I don’t carry around my copy of Jone “Moral Theology” so I can correct MY friends.

You are right but there is an emergency situation worldwide. Most priests are not doing that job and someone has to do it. Also, the laity is also called to be truth bearer. Times have changed and everyone is called to fight.

Thus, I am doing it for the sake of saving souls and not with the intentions to be a Pharisee!

Actually, Christ’s words have no expiration date. We are to

Let your light so shine before men that they see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

and

By this shall all men know you are my disciples, by your love one for another

So, good works, shining light, love. Those are our commands. Read 1 Corinthians chapter 13 as a mission statement.
